Grown-Up Science Project: 3 Gorgeous Ways to Craft With Sun Prints

Visually stunning and easy to make, DIY sun prints are a must-try craft this summer. Who knew science could be so much fun?

Have fun outside and learn a new skill this summer with HGTV's camp-themed series! We'll be sharing grown-up takes on camp crafts, delicious campfire recipes and ways to make backyard camping more luxurious. Follow along using #summercampweek all week long!

Did you know that sun printing (also known as blueprinting) dates back to the 1800s and was one of the earliest forms of photography? Pretty cool, huh? If you made one of these science crafts as a kid, you likely remember how fun it was to place an object on the sun-sensitive paper and watch it print right in front of your eyes. But now that you're all grown up, you can appreciate the deep Prussian blue prints not only for how easy they are to make, but for how insanely pretty they would look hanging on your wall. After all, blue is this summer's hottest color.

Arrange flowers on sun print paper Lay a piece of acrylic over the flowers and paper to sharpen edges and ensure no sun sneaks beneath leaves of flowers Place print in direct sunlight for 2-5 minutes or until the paper turns white. Rinse paper in water Hang to dry (on clothesline)

What's great about this project is that you only need a few inexpensive materials and around 30 minutes to achieve a stunning finished product. And the prints are so versatile that the crafting possibilites are seemingly endless. I used mine to make garden-themed place cards, framed art and one-of-a-kind stationery, but they would also look great as pennant banners, DIY envelopes or any other paper-based craft. Plus, they're kid-friendly and virtually mess-free!
