How to Make Terrazzo-Style Candles From Crayons

Don't toss those broken crayons. Instead, upcycle them into colorful candles.

Who among us does not have a random assortment of broken crayons? Take that wax to the next level by making colorful candles. We used ours to make orange and black Halloween-themed candles. Each candle has a terrazzo-style effect with colored wax and broken crayons. Kids, ask your parents for help with this project and always be careful when lighting candles.

Tools and Materials:

1. Upcycle Those Old Crayons

Gather broken crayons in various Halloween color combinations like green and purple or black, white and orange. We’re making our candles for Halloween, but you can do this any time of year with any color combination. Remove and discard the paper wrappers. Use scissors to cut the crayons down to approximately 1”-size chunks.

2. Prep the Jar

Place a waxed wick into a small glass container. Use a paintbrush or pencil to wrap the wick around to hold it up and keep it centered. Fill the jar approximately 3/4 of the way with the broken crayon bits.

3. Melt Wax

In a mug or other microwave-safe container, add soy candle wax and pieces of crayon. This will be the main color that surrounds the crayon bits in the final candle. Melt according to package instructions and remember that the mug will no longer be food-safe after this and should be used for crafting only. If you want to add candle scent, now is the time.

4. Add Wax to Jar

Pour the crayon-colored soy wax into the glass container. Allow to cool and set up. When the wax has solidified, trim the wick and light your new candle.
