What Is a Duvet Cover?

A duvet cover, a piece of bedding that covers and protects a duvet (also called a comforter), is a great bedding option for most sleepers. First, it protects your duvet from spills, dust, pet hair and other debris. Held in place by corner ties and often a button or zipper closure, a duvet cover also makes it easier to keep your bedding clean because you can machine wash the cover more frequently compared to a bulky comforter, a feature that is especially important for people with pets and kids. A duvet cover also allows you to easily change up the look and style of your bedding by swapping just the cover for different colors and patterns. Plus, spare covers store more easily and compactly than comforters and quilts. The only downside to duvet covers? It can take a bit of practice to master how to efficiently put one on without climbing inside of it. But don't worry — we have an easy tutorial showing the step-by-step process for how to put on a duvet cover to make this chore a breeze. Read on to learn about what factors to consider when shopping for a duvet cover, and shop our tested recommendations below.

The Best Duvets, Tested by HGTV Editors

From luxurious down to hypoallergenic down-alternative duvets, top your bed with one of these cloud-like comforters.

What to Consider When Shopping for a Duvet Cover

  • Fabric Material: Just like with any bedding, the material you choose for a duvet cover is important, especially if you're a hot sleeper or someone who is on Team No Top Sheet and will have more skin contact with the duvet cover. Cotton percale and linen are the most common (and two of our favorite) natural materials that are breathable and temperature-regulating, though they both wrinkle fairly easily. Synthetic materials like microfiber will be more budget-friendly and less prone to wrinkling, but not as breathable. Bamboo, eucalyptus and hemp are also gaining popularity as hypoallergenic, cooling and earth-friendly materials — usually because they require less water to grow. Since the duvet cover is the most visible piece of bedding, you'll want to consider how easily it wrinkles and if the variety of colors and patterns available fit your style. We prioritized covers with a wide variety of color options in our selections.
  • Weave and Thread Count: Percale is generally the best cooling weave type to look for because it's a looser, one-over-one-under pattern that allows for better air circulation and it has a matte finish. While sateen weaves translate to a silkier, cooler-to-the-touch feel, they're heavier and less breathable than looser weaves. One of the biggest misconceptions about bedding is that a higher thread count equals higher quality. Thread count refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads per square inch. So while higher thread counts and tighter weave styles can create silkier-feeling bedding with a luxurious-looking sheen, they can actually be hotter and less breathable throughout the night. Anywhere in the 200-800-thread-count range can be good, but 300-600 is a sweet spot. Some manufacturers don't even provide a thread count on the basis that it's irrelevant. You really don't need to put too much weight into thread count; fabric quality is really the most important factor to consider.
  • Closure Type and Corner Ties: One annoying feature of cheaper duvets and duvet covers is that they often shift around if they don't have sufficient corner ties to hold them in place. All of our recommendations have corner ties, though some are sturdier than others. Duvet covers also usually have buttons, zippers or ties at the bottom end. Most of the ones we tested feature buttons, so we made sure to note the quality and sturdiness of the buttons, how easily they were to fasten and whether or not the buttons were visible or hidden.
  • Care and Maintenance: Since the point of using a duvet cover is that you can wash it more frequently and easily than traditional comforters, you, of course, want a cover that is machine washable, doesn't come out looking too wrinkly, doesn't shrink and will hold up over time after multiple washes. One tip for ensuring the longevity of a duvet cover is to fasten the buttons closed before washing. Yes, it's an extra step, but it will prevent buttons from getting caught in the washer or dryer.

This cover feels as good as it looks. Crafted in Portugal from 100-percent premium, certified long-staple Egyptian cotton, these percale sheets are lightweight and durable with a soft, crisp finish that only gets better with time. If you're looking for a solid color duvet you can use for years that will keep you cool when you're hot and cozy when you're cold, this is it. The crisp, soft feel makes this duvet a great option for both top-sheet users and people who don't use them since it feels great against the skin. Available in three sizes and eight colors, this duvet is also Oeko-Tex-certified, features four twill corner ties, a matte finish and a hidden-button closure. After three years of using and washing this duvet cover, our tester said her only minor complaint was that some of the inner twill ties came loose and she had to re-sew them in place, but it's still her favorite duvet cover. She says it feels more luxurious and cozy than other cotton percale covers she's tried, and though it shows some wrinkles after washing, she likes the relaxed, almost linen-like look it has. Priced higher than what you'd find at most big box stores, our tester swears the quality of this duvet is worth the investment.

Oh, linen. We love linen here at HGTV. It's a natural plant-based material that's temperature-regulating and great for year-round use, and it has a relaxed look that makes wrinkles blend in — no need to precisely tuck or fold your bedding in a certain way when making your bed. It's got a casual, inviting look. Linen can get pricey though, and some people think it feels too rough or scratchy against the skin since it usually features a looser weave. But if you, too, love the look of linen, splurge for Brooklinen's linen duvet. It's one of the softest linen covers we tried and it doesn't feel "scratchy" at all. Woven in Portugal with the highest quality stone-washed Belgian flax, this duvet cover is the epitome of laid-back luxury that will give an airy layer of comfort to any bed. This duvet is Oeko-Tex-certified and features four twill corner ties and button closure. We're also partial to Brooklinen's duvet cover because, beyond their basic neutral colors that are always available, there are usually at least five on-trend, limited-edition colors and patterns available, such as this lovely yellow shade. Plus, the brand often runs discounts of 10-20 percent off, so you can often find the covers on sale.

From $139.90

If you love the look of linen but can't stomach paying more than $200 on bedding, we are seriously impressed with the quality of this linen duvet from Quince. Woven from 100-percent European flax and pre-washed for superior softness from day one, this mid-weight linen flax duvet cover set offers year-round luxury and feels as good as it looks. While not quite as soft or lightweight as Brooklinen's duvet, this linen cover will only get softer over time and is a great value for the price. Available in three sizes and seven earthy colors, this Quince duvet cover features good quality corner ties and large buttons that feel super sturdy. And even better, matching pillow shams come in the set, and you get free shipping and 365-day returns.

From $220

If you want to stick to cotton but prefer the sumptuous, silkier feel of sateen, this cotton sateen cover from Parachute is a great choice. Crafted in Portugal from 100-percent premium, certified long-staple Egyptian cotton, this sateen cover is soft and durable with a smooth feel that is great for year-round use, though slightly heavier and not quite as breathable as the percale pick. Available in three sizes and five colors, this duvet cover is Oeko-Tex-certified and features twill corner ties and button closure. Our tester says the duvet cover feels buttery soft and has just a subtle shine to the finish. She says, "This duvet is like sleeping with a cloud over my body; I didn’t realize it would be so amazing!"

If you're not looking to spend a lot or need bedding for a guest room or rental property, this budget Amazon find is a surprisingly good value. From the same brand behind the super popular microfiber sheets with more than 200,000 reviews, you can't beat the under-$30 price tag of this polyester duvet cover set from Mellanni. Available in three sizes and 15 colors and patterns, this duvet cover set is made from 100-percent polyester, features corner ties and button closure and comes with two pillowcases and two shams. Our tester says the cover felt surprisingly soft and more durable than budget cotton duvet covers she's tried, and looks-wise, she thinks it could definitely pass for cotton. Our tester also expected to sleep hotter under this polyester cover than cotton but didn't notice any significant temperature changes. As a pet owner, our tester also noted she finally felt comfortable bringing white bedding into her space because if her pets ruin it one day, she knows she'll only be out $30. Plus, according to the product description, the Mellanni brand says if you are not satisfied with your purchase at any point and for any reason, you can request a refund, and you don't even have to send back the product.

From $159

For people with allergies, sensitive skin, pets in the home or all three, it's a good idea to look for hypoallergenic bedding, and bamboo is becoming a more widely available hypoallergenic, earth-friendly option. This 100-percent organic bamboo duvet cover with a sateen weave from Ettitude has a cooling effect that feels smooth and silky — our tester says it literally feels like silk! Available in two sizes and 12 colors, the cover features corner ties, button closure and is made with Ettitude’s sustainable, proprietary lyocell fabric: CleanBamboo. This fabric is manufactured from organic bamboo that’s sourced from Forest Stewardship Council-certified farms. Compared to cotton, it reduces emissions and uses 500x less water. Plus, it’s Oeko-Tex certified, hypoallergenic, free from harmful chemicals, vegan and PETA-approved. Ettitude also donates one percent of the revenue from all of their 100-percent organic bamboo lyocell bedding products to support environmental efforts and protect the planet.

If you really want your bed to feel like a 5-star hotel bed, splurge for Boll & Branch's 100-percent organic cotton sateen duvet set in white with embroidered trim. Available in two sizes in white with three embroidery options, plus more colors and patterns, this duvet set comes with two shams. GOTS-, Oeko-Tex- and Fair Trade- certified, this cotton cover feels super smooth, soft and crisp and features corner ties and button closure. Our tester says the cover felt lightweight yet substantial at the same time and loves how it feels. Every little detail is perfect, from the stitching to the construction to the buttons. "More than any others I tried, this one felt like sleeping under a cloud," she says. "Every night feels like I’m sleeping in a luxury hotel. The brand describes this duvet cover as 'yielding, drapey' and that is completely accurate."
