Tidy Up Your Trinkets With a DIY Wall Jewelry Organizer

You won't believe how simple it is to turn a basic wooden tray into a hanging jewelry organizer.

If you're anything like me, the struggle is real when it comes to keeping your jewelry organized — I feel like I can never find enough storage solutions to accommodate my massive collection of earrings, bracelets and necklaces. A wall-mounted organizer is a great solution: It keeps everything in sight so you can easily find your favorite pieces, and it lets long necklaces hang freely so they don't get tangled.

I made this DIY version using a plain wooden tray and a decorative aluminum sheet I found at a craft store. The pattern of the metal is not only cute and trendy but also the perfect shape and size for displaying French wire earrings. Add some cup hooks, and you've got a spot to stash necklaces and bracelets. If you've been searching for a way to stylishly keep your jewelry in order, here are the steps I followed for this easy DIY project.

What You’ll Need

  • plain wooden tray
  • acrylic paint
  • decorative metal sheet
  • hot glue sticks
  • cup hooks
  • sawtooth hanger and nails
  • decorative trim

  • paintbrush
  • tin snips
  • hot glue gun
  • work gloves
  • hammer
  • scissors

Step 1: Paint Your Tray

Paint your entire tray any color or colors that strike your fancy. I chose a metallic blue for the inside, which I thought would look pretty peeking out from behind the metal, and a lighter matte blue for the outside.

Step 2: Add Cup Hooks

On one side of the tray, measure the center point and mark it with a pencil. Starting from the center point, measure and mark two more points on either side, spaced two inches apart, for a total of five points. (Depending on the size of your tray, you may have room for more or less points.) Screw in a cup hook by hand on each point. It may help to have a friend hold the tray steady.

Step 3: Cut Metal Sheet to Size

Trace the shape of your tray onto the metal sheet using a permanent marker. Then, use tin snips to cut out your tracing. Be sure to wear thick protective gloves, as cutting the metal will create some sharp edges. Place the sheet on top of the tray and trim off any excess if needed – you want the metal to be large enough to glue along the perimeter of the tray, but not so large that the edges hang off the side.

Step 4: Glue Metal Sheet to Tray

Using a hot glue gun, attach the metal sheet along the perimeter of the tray.

Step 5: Add Sawtooth Hanger

After the glue has dried, flip the tray over. On the opposite end from the cup hooks, position a sawtooth hanger in the center of the tray, one or two inches from the edge. (Be sure to measure the center point carefully so your jewelry organizer hangs level.) Carefully hammer the nails into place to secure the hanger.

Step 6: Add Decorative Trim

To add more color and cover any sharp metal edges, glue a decorative trim or cord around the perimeter of the tray. I used two layers of rickrack in mustard yellow to complement the blue paint. Then, hang your jewelry organizer on a wall and put your favorite earrings and necklaces on display. Alternatively, if you’d prefer an earring holder that sits on your dresser, you could omit the cup hooks and sawtooth hanger – just make sure your tray has wide enough sides so it will stay steady on a flat surface.
