I Tested Article’s Lubek Outdoor Sectional Through Four Seasons — Here’s How It Held Up

For years, the porch of my tiny rental home was one of those spaces I was glad to have but slightly embarrassed for anyone else to see. I had a Facebook Marketplace table and chairs that technically made it functional, but the whole thing still looked shabby and unloved.

So in the spring of 2025, I decided to finally get down and dirty with an actual porch makeover. I power-washed, scraped old paint and painted the porch, door and window trim. And after putting in all that work, I didn't want to just throw my old furniture back on and call it a day. I was determined to make the space useful to me all year long.

Despite my small space, I love to entertain, so a sectional was at the top of my wish list. The problem? Just like my house, my porch is petite, and most outdoor sectionals decidedly are not. Enter the Article Lubek 82.5" Outdoor Low Left Sectional in Slate Gray. I’ve now lived with it for 16 months and through all four seasons. I’ve worked on it, eaten dinner on it and hosted friends on it. It has also been soaked by rain, baked in afternoon sun and left outside through snow and freezing temperatures.

And after all that, I'm finally ready to share exactly what I think.

What Is Article and Why Did I Choose the Lubek Outdoor Sofa?

I first heard about Article through a friend at work who also happens to be HGTV's senior commerce editor. She had a gorgeous blue velvet Article sofa (Sven 72" Tufted Velvet Loveseat in Plush Cascadia Blue), and once I spotted it, I couldn't get it out of my head.

A little research taught me that Article first launched in 2013 as a direct-to-consumer furniture company. Its founders came from tech rather than traditional furniture retail and saw an opportunity to cut some of the layers between furniture manufacturers and shoppers. Today, the brand sells modern furniture and decor for the entire home, which includes a sizable outdoor collection.

But even after learning more about the brand, ordering a large piece of furniture online makes me nervous. What if it looks different than I expect once it's actually in my space? What if it's too precious or not comfortable? Knowing Article offers a 30-day return window made a chronic worrier like me feel considerably better about giving the brand a shot. Still, because I cannot be stopped, I also did everything I could to make sure the Lubek would work before taking the plunge.

First came some very professional measurements, and no, this is not a crime scene. I'm a visual type of gal, so I taped the dimensions of each item I was planning for directly onto my porch floor to see exactly how much space I was about to sacrifice and how tight the finished setup might feel. Then I lived with that for a few days before making any major decisions.

The Lubek quickly became my frontrunner. At 82.5 inches wide, it could give me the sectional I wanted without eating my entire porch. It also comes in left and right configurations, and the left version worked with my layout. But because I’m just a little bit crazy when it comes to livability and design, I still wasn’t ready to commit. Next, I used Article’s extremely handy virtual tool that you'll find right on the product page to see what the sectional would look like in my actual space. I literally just held my phone up to my porch, and there it was, like magic.

That ended up saving me from another mistake. I had been considering Article’s coordinating square coffee table, but the virtual view made it clear that its footprint would be too large for my space. With the Lubek's seat sitting just 13 inches off the ground, I also needed something low enough to look proportional. I found a smaller acacia coffee table that matched the Lubek's wood frame, fit my available floor space and, crucially, sat low enough to look like it actually belonged there. And while buying everything at once certainly would have been easier, I actually prefer the more collected result. The mix looks more designed and, in my opinion, chicer than a one-and-done matching outdoor set.

Before finalizing everything, I also threw in an Article outdoor rug and striped pillow. The rug has since been discontinued, but it deserves a shoutout. I worried a light-colored outdoor rug might be a terrible idea, but it recently survived a visit from my friend’s kids that was, let’s just say, cloudy with a chance of lasagna. A little stain spray and minimal scrubbing later, the stain was completely gone. Consider me impressed.

How I Tested the Article Lubek Outdoor Sectional

Despite everything I ordered, there weren’t too many cumbersome boxes to contend with. I had an extra set of hands for assembly, and the sectional came together fairly painlessly.

Article estimates assembly at about 10 minutes. I didn’t time myself, but zero to lounging in 10 seems fairly realistic. My one complaint was the little tool included for assembly. The provided Allen wrench wasn't quite a fit, which would have been more of a pain point if I hadn't already had my own set.

Once assembled, I quickly discovered that the cushions were just how I like them. They’re soft enough to feel cozy but firm enough for extended sitting. That second part matters because when I use this thing, I tend to stay a while. The chaise is plenty long for curling up with a good book, and the cushions have retained their shape surprisingly well over time. Most recently, I had two adults and three little kids piled onto the sectional. Cozy for sure, but comfy nonetheless. The frame still feels completely solid, too, with no wobbling or creaking to report.

There is one thing you should know before ordering: This sofa truly is low. I find it comfortable, but someone who prefers a higher, more upright seat may feel differently. As a design choice, though, I love it. The Lubek gives me a substantial sectional without visually swallowing the space. It also sits low enough that it doesn’t block the window behind it, which means I don't lose any natural light inside and still have an open view looking out.

The real test, though, has been simply leaving it outside for 16 months. Article recommends protecting the Lubek from prolonged sun exposure and storing it indoors during rainy or cold weather.

Did I do that? No. Will you? Probably not.

And while I'm not recommending that you ignore the care instructions, I don't think storing or even covering outdoor furniture is in the cards for most people. So I'll share what happened when I left my sectional out year-round. For reference, my porch is covered, but it gets tons of afternoon sun. Storms also blow plenty of rain onto the sofa, and the cushions have been completely drenched more than once. It has stayed outside through all four East Tennessee seasons, which means plenty of heat and humidity, plus freezing temperatures, snow and ice.

The cushions dry surprisingly quickly after getting wet, and the slate gray fabric has held up far better than I expected. My last outdoor sofa attempt was another Facebook Marketplace purchase. It had a colorful ikat pattern that the sun essentially erased in less than a year, so my fear of sun-bleached fabrics was not unsubstantiated. I fully expected some version of that to happen again. After two scorching summers, I am still so impressed with the upholstery. The website even notes that sun exposure can lighten the fabric, but if mine is any lighter, I honestly can't tell. And the wood still looks as rich and shiny as the day I got it. Meanwhile, the non-Article acacia coffee table I bought around the same time has faded dramatically (I am not pleased).

Keeping it clean has been pretty painless, too. Is it crazy that I just use my normal vacuum cleaner for this? Every so often, I run it over the cushions to pick up dirt, pollen and the grass clippings the lawn mower insists on blowing onto the porch, despite my dream of a perfectly pristine outdoor space. And since little Stitch (below) loves an afternoon lounge as much as I do, there's usually some cat hair in the mix, too. Everything comes up with no problem.

I’ve also subjected the Lubek to a cleaning test I’m fairly certain Article did not anticipate. After a few months of minimal porch use, I pulled back one of the pillows and discovered a hard little wasp nest behind it. I knocked it off (while saying a little prayer), wiped the area with a wet rag, and that was that.

Truly, for something so pretty, it can take a beating.

What I Love About the Article Lubek Outdoor Sectional

The biggest surprise is how little there is to report. I mean that as a compliment. I expected some fading, and I wouldn’t have been shocked by cushions losing their shape, especially considering my less-than-perfect adherence to Article’s care recommendations. Neither has happened. Nothing has permanently stained, the upholstery still looks like it did the day it arrived, and the cushions haven’t turned sad and saggy. For outdoor furniture I haven’t babied, I really am impressed.

I also love the Lubek’s low profile more now that I’ve seen what it does for the space. Yes, it made finding appropriately tiny tables a bit of a pain, but I think the hunt ultimately gave me a better-looking porch.

But my favorite thing about the Lubek may have less to do with the sofa itself than what happened after it arrived. Before the makeover, my porch was something I was slightly embarrassed for people to see. Now I catch myself staring at it every time I come home. And when any friends come by for the first time, I find myself asking, “Did you see the porch?” before I can stop myself.

The sofa obviously can’t take credit for the paint, curtains and everything else I changed (and if it tries to, I will fight it), but it gave me a comfortable place to actually live in the space. And that was the whole point.

What I Don’t Love About the Article Lubek Outdoor Sectional

My biggest gripe is with the two long seat cushions. They slide around more easily than I’d like, so every now and again I have to shove them back where they belong. Some sort of grip or fastener underneath would make a world of difference. It’s annoying, but it’s not a deal breaker.

The other consideration is the 13-inch seat height. I love the look and am comfortable sitting on it, but that doesn’t mean everyone will be. If you already know you prefer higher seating or find getting up from low furniture uncomfortable, I’d look at some of Article’s other outdoor lounge options instead.

It also limits your options for coffee and side tables because standard-height pieces can look awkward beside it. I’m thrilled with the final design I ended up with, but getting there took more hunting than buying a coordinating set would have.

Bottom Line: Is Article Patio Furniture Worth Buying?

After living with the Lubek well beyond the honeymoon stage, I’m still genuinely impressed by it. It looks beautiful on my porch, it’s comfortable enough that I actually want to spend time out there, and it has required remarkably little from me to keep it looking good.

There is one thing I'd change: those slippery seat cushions. And while I love the unusually low profile, I know it won’t suit everyone. But those things are pretty minor compared with how well the sectional has performed where it matters most to me.

Would I choose the Lubek again? Absolutely. I’d feel comfortable spending my own money on it, and I’ve already recommended Article to friends and family. For me, that's the ultimate seal of approval.
