One of the easiest ways to completely change a room is by switching out your rug. It adds color if you can’t paint the walls or spring for new furniture. It adds pattern if you don’t want to commit to wallpaper. And, if you live in a small space or an open-layout home, it helps create vignettes. But area rugs, and even rug runners, can get super pricey — especially if you have your eye on authentic vintage rugs. So, we’ve scoured the internet and rounded up the best sites to shop for affordable rugs, from budget-friendly large area rugs to cheap vintage rugs to style dupes that just look vintage. Check out our go-to sites below for sourcing affordable rugs, and spruce up your space on a budget.

What We Don't Like
  1. Most rugs aren't as high-pile as other brands

If you have kids or pets, you need a Ruggable rug. If a spill or an accident happens, just throw the whole thing in your washing machine like a bed comforter, even the 8'x10' sizes. And these magic carpets are surprisingly affordable, too. You can get an 8'x10' of this rug with the included cover for $459. You buy the rug with a Velcro-like grip pad that lays beneath the rug cover and holds it in place, adding a little extra cushion, or opt for the cushioned rug pad that softens your underfoot even more. Their smooth, velvety chenille rugs are the most common, but they also have plush rugs, jute-inspired rugs and outdoor rugs — yes, WASHABLE outdoor rugs and doormats! We also love the unique collaborations, like Jonathan Adler, Star Wars and Disney.

From $13.76
What We Like
  1. This is the best place to find designer dupes
  2. Free shipping on orders over $35
What We Don't Like
  1. The shipping times usually aren't that fast

If you love the jute rugs in Crate & Barrel or Pottery Barn catalogs, you can score the same look for a lot less at Bed Bath & Beyond. The big box brand recently merged with discount site Overstock and has so many natural fiber rugs on sale, from camel-colored jute to flaxseed-colored sisal. These natural fiber rugs like this Safavieh one are also perfect for layering under antique runners to fake a larger area rug. It’s one of our favorite design hacks.

  1. Materials Jute, sisal, wool, cotton and polyester
  2. Pile Low, medium and high
  3. Sizes 2x3, 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, 10x14

What We Don't Like
  1. Certain sizes are often sold out and are rarely restocked

If you have champagne taste, Wayfair is a great site to shop for home decor. You can snag rugs from fashion labels such as Nicole Miller, Ralph Lauren, Ted Baker and more for a lot less than department stores. And Wayfair usually has the widest selection of en-vogue trends.

  2. Pile Low, medium and high
  3. Sizes 2x3, 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, 10x14

What We Like
  1. The huge selection is sorted by color and style
  2. Free shipping on most orders
What We Don't Like
  1. Colors don't always match product photographs in person

Don’t let the fancy name fool you. Most giant area rugs on Boutique Rugs are less than $550. The way the site is organized by style and color is super helpful when you’re shopping for a new rug, and the filters by design make it handy to compare styles. Unlike other sites, Boutique Rugs has a huge selection of mats and runners, and the styles are seriously sophisticated. It’s a great place to snag a Persian-style design for a kitchen mat, entryway or mudroom.

  1. Materials Jute, sisal, wool, cotton, leather, polypropylene and polyester
  2. Pile Low, medium and high
  3. Sizes 2x3, 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, 10x14

  5. Textures Tufted, flatwoven, shag and plush
From $20
What We Like
  1. Great selection of different patterns and styles
  2. Free shipping on all orders
What We Don't Like
  1. Only a small percentage of inventory is machine-washable

If you tend to gravitate to more neutrals, Rugs USA has a great selection of neutral area rugs that are anything but boring, from plush shag rugs to hand-tufted designs. We love this minimal, Moroccan-inspired zig-zag. It looks very similar to a bestseller over at West Elm.

  1. Materials Jute, sisal, wool, cotton and polypropylene
  2. Pile Low, medium and high
  3. Sizes 2x3, 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, 10x14
  4. Other shapes Round, square, oval and runners
  5. Textures Tufted, flatwoven, shag and plush
From $99
What We Like
  1. Offers deals on authentic vintage rugs
  2. Free shipping in the continental U.S.
What We Don't Like
  1. Sizes are very limited

If you want a one-of-a-kind rug, you can shop gorgeous vintage rugs from all over the world without sifting through dusty antique stores and estate sales on the direct-to-consumer site Revival. The antique rugs are more expensive than vintage-inspired new rugs you'll find at the other sites on this list, but they're all well-priced and you can find several under $500. While finding just the right style and size for your space may be tricky with vintage rugs since only one size is usually available. Revival Rugs also has a "Revival-made" line of new rugs inspired by traditional techniques, handwoven in India and available in multiple sizes.

  1. Materials Jute, wool, cotton, hemp, silk and polypropylene
  2. Pile Low, medium and high
  3. Sizes 2x3, 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, 6x9, 6x10, 8x10, 9x12, 10x14
  4. Other shapes Round and runners
  5. Textures Tufted, flatwoven, shag and plush
From $51.49
What We Like
  1. Great selection of wipeable cloth for kitchens
  2. Free shipping on all orders
What We Don't Like
  1. Small selection of machine-washable rugs

Rugs Direct had tons of trendy, budget-friendly rugs, but the coolest product line is their collection of vinyl cloth. These trompe l'oeil designs mimic pricey tile and it’s gorgeous, from Portuguese azulejos to French bistro-inspired “tile.” The smaller mats and runners are perfect for kitchens, laundry rooms or mudrooms because they just wipe clean.

  1. Materials Vinyl, wool, jute, sisal, silk, cotton, polypropylene and polyester
  2. Pile Low, medium and high
  3. Sizes 2x3, 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, 10x14, 12x15
  4. Other shapes Round, oval, square and runners
  5. Textures Tufted, flatwoven, shag and plush
From $30
What We Like
  1. Designer collabs and in-house brands are always on trend
  2. Free shipping on orders over $35
What We Don't Like
  1. Not as many options for runners or circle-shaped rugs

My current living room area rug is from Target and people are shocked when I tell them where it’s from. I’ve had it for a couple of years, and after everything from kid marker messes to coffee spills, it still looks brand new. Target does a really good job of partnering with designers to offer high style at a lower price point.

  1. Materials Jute, sisal, wool, cotton, polypropylene and polyester
  2. Pile Low, medium and high
  3. Sizes 2x3, 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, 10x14

  1. Best selection of Bohemian styles and funky statement rugs
What We Don't Like
  1. Shipping is only free for orders over $75

The funky apparel company has really doubled down on its homewares line in the last couple of years with tons of big-ticket items such as furniture and sofas. And they have a great selection of trendy area rugs at a reasonable price. We love this checkerboard shag rug for a hip loft or studio. Plus, most of their rugs are machine-washable!

  1. Materials Wool, jute, cotton and polyester
  2. Pile Flat, low, medium and high
  3. Sizes 2x3, 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, 6x9, 8x10
  4. Other shapes Round, runners, curved and abstract
  5. Textures Tufted, flatwoven, shag and plush
From $99
What We Like

What We Don't Like
  1. The wipeable spill-proof surface doesn't mean it's stain-proof

We're obsessed with washable rugs, and Tumble's spillproof and machine-washable area rugs make cleanup a breeze. Tumble's rugs come with two lines of defense against everyday messes: spillproof technology, allowing you to quickly wipe away liquids, and a machine-washable construction to tackle larger stains. The rug pad features a cushy, rubberized foam layer for easy installation, movement and cleanup. And there are no hook-and-loop fasteners keeping the rug in place; simply tuck the pad's corners into the rug's corner pockets to keep everything situated until you're ready to wash. Tumble offers a curated collection of hand-drawn patterns to suit various styles and tastes, too, from bohemian to traditional.

  1. Materials Polyester
  2. Pile Low, medium and high
  3. Sizes 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, 10x14

What We Don't Like
  1. Very limited stock and sizing

If you love the thrill of the chase, TJ Maxx is online now with a limited selection of homewares to browse. It’s not the best spot to shop if you already know exactly what rug you want, but it’s the perfect place to pursue when you want unique options you haven’t seen at every other big box retailer. And there are some serious gems for the taking. Where else can you score a Brooks Brothers rug for under $150?

  1. Materials Jute, sisal, wool, cotton, polypropylene and polyester
  2. Pile Low, medium and high
  3. Sizes 2x3, 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12

What We Don't Like
  1. Not as many sizes to choose from

We love scooping up full and queen-size bedding from PBTeen because it's typically a fraction of the cost as Pottery Barn. And rugs are the same way. It's not just kid designs! PBTeen designs for dorms and apartments, too, and you can snag a trendy area rug with a similar vibe to West Elm for a lot less. PBTeen even collaborates with luxury fashion brands such as LoveShackFancy for unique pieces you can't find anywhere else.

  1. Materials Wool, cotton, jute and polyester
  2. Pile Flat, low and medium
  3. Sizes 2x3, 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, 6x9, 7x10, 8x10, 9x12

Your favorite rug brand is probably already on Amazon, from Ruggable to Rifle Paper Co. x Loloi to Safavieh. These Amazon storefronts may not carry all colors and sizes or every specific style offered by brands, but if you find it on Amazon, chances are the shipping is much faster — and free if you're an Amazon Prime Member.
