Buffy’s Breeze Comforter Turns Down the Heat When You Sleep

How’s the heat wave treating you? Me, not so great. I run hot-natured anyway, so the extra-warm temperatures have me hanging out indoors more than I’d like. Worse, it’s affecting my sleep — I like a cushy, comfy bed, but my go-to down-alternative comforter for cooler seasons is simply too hot to handle right now. So I looked into summer-weight comforters and landed on the 100-percent eucalyptus Breeze Comforter by direct-to-consumer brand Buffy. It claims softness, coolness and sustainability, so I had to try it. Here’s what I thought.

First, let me say that I'm very impressed with Buffy’s commitment to sustainability, immediately evident in their shipping practices. My comforter arrived in a box that looked way too small to contain a King-sized comforter — but the Breeze Comforter was, in fact, vacuumed-sealed inside completely recyclable packaging. In addition to Buffy’s smart shipping practices, they also use recycled materials in some of their comforter filling, diverting waste from landfills; make their signature fabric from eucalyptus, which is grown using far less water than it takes to grow cotton; offset CO2 emissions from shipping; donate returned items; and are working towards having a closed-loop supply chain by 2030. That’s all a big win in my book.

But as we all should know by now, a sustainably-made product is only sustainable if the user likes it and it lasts — and so far, so good on those fronts. Switching from my other-seasons comforter to Buffy’s Breeze Comforter has been a game-changer for my summer. I’ve truly slept better since having it. I don’t wake up sweaty or, more likely, having kicked off every single cover and sheet — and likely kicked my husband in the process — during the night. And I can still get into a comfy bed and get a cozy feeling while falling asleep. My earlier attempts to sleep under lighter bedding — like, just a sheet — didn’t cut it.

The Buffy Breeze comes in Twin/Twin XL, Full/Queen and King/Cal King sizes, all in white. While it would be nice to see some colors, they also sell eucalyptus sheets and duvet covers in a range of restful hues — naturally dyed using materials like indigo, safflower, pomegranate and tea. I don’t have sheets or a cover from Buffy yet, but they’re on my wish list. Buffy also sells their original Cloud Comforter, which costs slightly less than the Breeze and has less emphasis on cooling properties. Overall, I’d say there are a few reasons to sleep easy under Buffy bedding: the cooling comfort, for sure, but also the peace of mind from knowing your good sleep doesn’t come at the expense of the environment.
