Luxury means being able to do yoga poses in your shower â at least for one of designer Susan Fredman's clients. She delivered not only a large space but also a dramatic boulder rock for seating. Earth tones, textured tiles, natural light and a steam shower complete this soothing, masculine space.

One of the first decisions to make about a luxury bathroom is whether you want it to reflect the overall style of the home—or the master bedroom, if it's adjacent—or to present a style departure. Depending on the proximity of the luxury bathroom to the master suite, a drastic turn away from the overall style could create a jarring effect. On the other hand, subtle design flourishes can add tremendous personality to a luxury bathroom, and make it feel like its own space.

Something to keep in mind when planning a luxury bathroom, particularly if it's within or adjacent to a master suite, is that openness is your friend. Creating a flow between the master suite and luxury bathroom will make both spaces feel larger; it will also increase convenience in the overall space.

When it comes to fixtures like sinks and tubs, be inspired to "go big" in a luxury bathroom. Double sinks are often a must both for convenience and beauty; a large, standalone tub or whirlpool bath can act as a gorgeous and substantial focal point for the entire design. For the shower, consider extending the open feel by investing in an all-glass enclosure, or even an entirely open shower. If you've got the space, you can also enclose the toilet in its own nook, for added privacy.

Finally, consider adding a sitting area with a bench or chair for added beauty and convenience.
