5 Mood-Boosting Design Tips to Try in Your Bedroom
Because your personal sanctuary should leave you feeling happy and fulfilled.
Chances are you spend a good chunk of time in your bedroom, from sleeping to getting ready in the morning to just relaxing. So why not put in a little extra effort to turn it into a space that you truly enjoy? Think about it — designing a bedroom that makes you happy is one of the easiest ways to ensure you always wake up on the right side of the bed with a smile on your face, no less.
And it's not difficult to create a room that boosts your mood. Your bedroom is likely already stocked with the essentials (a bed, dresser and nightstand), so all you'll need to add are accessories and smaller touches to turn your space into a happy one. To help steer you in the right direction, I reached out to Vicki Fulop, the co-founder of bedding brand Brooklinen. Read on for her expert tips.
1: Start by decluttering.
"I think decluttering is essential for a mood-boosting bedroom and for the home in general. I’m not always great at staying on top of it, but when I do I feel the difference. Studies have shown that visual clutter negatively impacts mood in a variety of ways, including increasing stress, anxiety and depression, so maintaining a clutter-free space is a great way to create a positive and tranquility-inducing atmosphere in the home!"
2: Find bedding that lifts your spirits.
"Your bedding’s impact on your mood is actually experienced via the majority of your senses! Visually, your bed is generally the largest piece of furniture and the focal point of your bedroom, so your linens are key to making you smile as soon as you walk in. They enable you to express your design sensibility, provide the most inexpensive way to quickly give your bedroom a facelift or refresh, and [they] can free your mind from the clutter of the day."
3: And keeps you comfortable.
"Physically, your bedding has a huge impact on your mood, health and wellness by impacting how well you sleep. A bad night’s sleep will leave you feeling cranky, irritable and less productive. And a consistent lack of sleep is linked to everything from duller-looking skin to higher risks for obesity and mood disorders. Thus, a great set of linens is a great way to insure yourself against sleep troubles; the more comfortable your sheets are, the more likely you will be to get a good night’s sleep. To ensure you get the best ones, look for 100-percent long-staple cotton weaves and avoid synthetic blends. The former are soft and breathable, while the latter trap more air, leaving you sweaty, hot and tossing and turning through the night."
4: But don't forget the accessories.
"My husband, Rich, and I also love to add candles into the bedroom, because scents can trigger specific moods and memories. Rich’s current favorite is our Nightcap candle, a masculine scent that captures a blood-orange and bourbon scent. It’s his happy place. And green plants and fresh flowers are key! Plants clean the air, and both are known to be major mood boosters that help you feel happier and healthier."
5: And always make your bed — seriously!
"It's important to try making your bed every morning. Studies have shown that people that make their beds report feeling happier and more productive, so it’s worth a shot!"
