Our Top Picks for the Best Rugs

Rugs play many important roles in your room's design. They soften your floors — creating a cozy, more comfortable environment— reduce noise and add warmth to any surface. Additionally, they often pull the entire room together, either by combining your color scheme in one piece or defining a specific spot, like a seating area or around your bed.

Since there's a seemingly limitless number of rugs to scour through, we went straight to the source and asked designers to share the best type of rug for every room in your home. They take into account the function of a space and what materials work best, and we've found stylish options that are just a checkout button away.

Best Rugs for the Kitchen

Sisal rugs are versatile and known for their strength and durability, making them ideal for hard-working kitchens. "Merida nailed their collaboration with Ashe + Leandro, and as soon as I saw this design, I knew it would provide strong visual contrast and drama in such a narrow space. The deep charcoal color was bold enough to stand on its own against the kitchen's edgy wood and marble finishes, and the handwoven sisal and suede composition is ideal for all the traction that area will likely receive. Great design, great wear and tear, can't beat it," says Cortney Bishop of Cortney Bishop Design.

Best Rugs for Foyers and Hallways

Opt for hide rugs in high-traffic areas, like foyers and hallways, because they can stand up to the hustle and bustle. "I love to use hide rugs in foyers and hallways. Since hides are natural animal skin, the material is incredibly durable and cleanable. Hides can be made into rugs in a variety of patterns that include checked, striped, chevron and even circular patterns. This striped hide rug was an ideal choice for this large, central hallway. We made it to size and only included white and gray colors which give the rug some variety but still allows it to have a neutral and soft effect," says Claire Paquin of Clean Design Partners.

Best Rugs for Living Rooms

For areas where you spend the most time entertaining, like family rooms and dens, wool and sisal rugs are the best options, says Merida Studio, because they are incredibly durable. The texture and depth of this rug from Merida's Wander Collection adds a counterpoint to the clean, angular, powerful lines and black-and-white composition of the space. This rug is a wool/sisal blend, which is not only durable but also sound-absorbing and sustainable.

Best Rugs for Bedrooms

High-grade nylons combine our favorite factors: durability + stain-resistance + oh-so cushy. Kelly Sutherland of Connie Vernich Interior Designs says, "Go with a rug that is soft, plush and comfortable on your feet but that also has stain-resistant qualities. I love high-grade nylon, for example. For this particular rug, a patterned carpet with great scale was selected. The rug material is very soft underfoot and easy to maintain as it is constructed from high-grade nylon. The edges were serged in a matching thread to the carpet to provide a high-end traditional rug finish. Don't forget the final touch — a quality rug cushion ensures extra comfort while keeping the rug in good shape for as long as possible."

Best Rugs for Stairways

For stairways, look for flat-woven wools with tight weaves, since they're strong enough to handle high-traffic areas. "White was incorporated into this space to make it bright and refreshing when you walk in. We knew we had to add a darker tone to the stair runner. The rug is hand-knotted wool made by J.D. Staron, the Gopala Collection, and looks like linen so it adds an unexpected design detail to the stairs, pulling in the turquoise tone from the light fixture," says Caroline Grant and Dolores Suarez of Dekar Design.

Best Rugs for Family Rooms

Wool rugs are easy to clean and have fibers that contain lanolin, a natural stain repellent. They're a smart choice for family rooms, where kids and pets spend most of their time. "This open, second-floor media room overlooks the living room below. We needed a strong anchor to be the foundation of the space and to define the character of the room. Merida's classic buffalo check was the perfect solution — boldly inviting guests to gather for conversation, nestle in with a book or cluster for watching movies. The check pattern instantly conveys a sense of warmth and familiarity. Additionally, our clients planned to use this space to watch sporting events — so we needed something to withstand rowdy sports fans and the beautiful, quality wool construction of this rug meant it was the perfect yet practical fit," says the designers at Foley & Cox Interiors.

Best Rugs for Bathrooms

Vintage rugs not only have a classic appeal, but their timeworn quality means they were handcrafted to last for generations. "I love using vintage rugs in bathrooms since they add great color and texture. They soften a space that can sometimes feel cold and sterile. Select a soft rug, something that feels good under your bare feet in the morning, for the vanity or common area of the bathroom," says Ashley Clark of sKout.

Best Rugs for Dining Rooms

Our trusty wool is also a top choice for dining rooms. "For this dining room, I chose a bold, asymmetrical black-and-white graphic rug to counterbalance the feminine botanical wallpaper. I wanted the room to have an edge and layered pattern. Since spills are a given, I advise clients to use 100-percent wool rugs for easy cleanup. Also, using a patterned rug in a dining room can better camouflage any stubborn stains. We shouldn't be stressed during dining parties," says Sarah Wittenbraker of Sarah Wittenbraker Design.
