Beat the Winter Blahs With This Resort-Style Backyard

Can't get away for spring break? Take a virtual trip instead.

Lighting can make a huge difference to the look of an outside space. Bistro lights in the oak tree, illuminated containers and landscape lights help create a romantic and fun atmosphere. The pergola was designed to have decorative privacy screens in between the posts and is lit with decorative sconces.

Picture it: A pool with cool, blue waters, a cabana with a relaxing swing bed and twinkling cafe lights. Sounds like the perfect spot to while away the hours over spring break, right?

For one Minneapolis family, that resort setting is as accessible as walking out their back door, thanks to an inviting backyard design created by the team at Mom's Design Build.

"They wanted a beach house in the middle of the city," says Heather Grossmann, senior designer at Mom's Design Build.

Outdoor Entertaining Space with a Pool

Outdoor Entertaining Space with a Pool

A raised deck next to a house can be used to extend the indoor and outdoor space in a home. This backyard space kept the deck one level to create one large space, from the sliding doors to the open-air porch and into the backyard. To make your home feel more like a resort, make sure the pool can been seen from the moment you walk through the front.

The centerpiece of this beautiful backyard design is the pool. Because it can be seen from every corner of the yard as well as from the home's interiors, the designers included fountains to create a gorgeous water feature when not in use.

Edging the pool is a row of chaise lounges with thick cushions covered with beachy stripes — perfect for relaxing with a view of the pool and a cocktail in hand. Strings of bistro lights and illuminated planters cast a pleasing glow around the area at night.

Coastal Pool Deck

The design of the pool deck mimics the front porch, which ties the spaces together. Synthetic turf between the lounging space and the pool allows the surface water to drain and creates maximum flexibility in the use of the tight space for entertaining. The flooring is made of a tropical hardwood.

For those cooler Minnesota evenings, a stylish fire pit is flanked by a cozy sectional sofa for intimate gatherings with friends (and maybe some roasted marshmallows).

And don't worry about crossing a potentially muddy yard to reach the fire pit. The design team opted for sturdy synthetic turf to to stand up to heavy traffic while entertaining in brutal Minnesota winters.

The swing-bed pergola defines a space for homeowners to sit back and enjoy their backyard. Palm trees were added to add more of a resort-vibe to nights by the pool. Touches of home can be seen in the columns, which mimic the front porch, and dainty white picket fences on either side.

The true showpiece of the entire yard is the pergola at the foot of the pool. A hanging daybed could easily seem at home in the Bahamas or Las Vegas — especially with the surrounding palm trees.

This tranquil space is perfect for deserving homeowners Mark and Susan Lacek, who founded Faith's Lodge in honor of their late daughter. The nonprofit center provides a comforting space for grieving families, and the Lacek's yard gives the couple and their two children a space of their own to rest and recharge.

Deck Features Wood Pergola

Positioned at the head of the pool, the swing bed allows for sweeping views of the entire backyard. A wooden pergola overhead provides some relief from the sun, while palm trees and annual flowers add natural greenery to the setting.

In-Ground Trampoline

Behind the swing bed, an in-ground trampoline gives the owners' daughters room to practice new flips and other gymnastics tricks. Because the trampoline is lined with green trim, it blends in with the synthetic turf for a seamless visual effect.

Synthetic Tumbling Turf

Because the yard is naturally flat, the designers used synthetic turf with crushed rocks underneath to assist with drainage. At the same time, the space is ideal for the owners' gymnast daughters, giving them room to tumble and practice cartwheels.

Coastal-Inspired Dining Table

Though the table appears to seat eight, it actually extends to accomodate additional guests. Starfish accents and a seahorse centerpiece further evoke thoughts of the beach, ensuring that the backyard feels truly tropical and inviting.

Raised Deck Includes Lounge, Fire Pit

Wanting to make the backyard feel like a natural extension of the home, the designers echoed specific tones from the interior and front yard. Thus, the raised deck includes wood paneling and white columns, as well as boasts a fire pit and lounge.

Private Pool and Water Features

Because the pool can be seen straight through the house, the designers added fountains to draw additional visual interest. On the opposite side of the water, planters with LEDs illuminate the space for playing late into the evening.

Party-Perfect Backyard

Stepping into the backyard becomes an otherworldly experience as bistro lights, sconces and containers create a luminous atmosphere. With a pool, swing bed, raised deck and outdoor kitchen, this space is perfect for hosting a number of friends and family members.

Swing Bed With Luxe Touches

Though located in Minnesota, the home includes a number of warm coastal touches, like this textured swing bed. Here, throw pillows and a cushioned base lure the owners to recline while their kids swim and play. Palm trees on either side further the resort-style vibes.

Outdoor Kitchen and Dining Area

Entertaining is a breeze thanks to a fully-stocked outdoor kitchen and connecting dining area. Here, teal and coral plates and linens give the reclaimed wood table a coastal touch, while candles keep the setting intimate.
