Rooftop Garden With Four Chairs

Originally, this New York City rooftop was large, empty and hot with the sun beating down especially on the side of the river. So one of the main goals was to make it cooler, which landscape designers achieved with a masterful collection of container gardens, shade structures and trees.

Flower Boxes and Skyline View

Boxes filled with colorful, sweet-scented flowers are a free-flowing counterpoint to this roof deck's urban views. The planting was inspired by beaches, the sun and prairies, and was intended to make the outdoor space feel like a vacation getaway.

Pergola and Built In Benches

A large pergola was installed in the center of the rooftop garden to shade an outdoor dining area. Lavender, achilleas, blue stem, wisteria and crepe myrtle create a lush environment all around it.

The deck has incredible views of Manhattan's skyline, so designers protected them—especially near the dining area—with an airy pergola and low-scale plantings.

Rooftop Deck With Black Pergola

A cooking area—with an outdoor kitchen and two grills—sits adjacent to the inviting dining area, both ready to host small gatherings as easily as large parties. Kids can come too; there's a green play space nearby.

A birch tree in a large planter is the anchor of one of the rooftop garden's seating arrangements. The deck was divided up into four usable areas: one for lounging, one for dining, one for playing and one for cooking.

In between the pergola-covered dining area and the rooftop's two BBQ stations, an intimate sitting area feels quiet and peaceful. The urban space is no longer the bare, shade-less wasteland it once was.

In order to better accommodate large catered parties, designers planned for not one, but two outdoor kitchen and BBQ areas.

For the children of the family, designers set up a play area using Synlawn, a material that is soft to the touch and has the added advantage of keeping its green even in the winter. A custom-made shade sail extends on super sunny days.
