Our Top 16 Picks From the 2017 'Pinterest 100' Trend Report

See what's coming down the pipeline in the world design, travel and entertaining.

Many of us are thinking about resolutions, new projects or a revamped health routine with the arrival of the new year. But for Pinterest, it’s all about the trends.

Each year they release the Pinterest 100 — a fun, trend report style board featuring all the new design, food and travel trends they think we’ll all be talking about in 2017. They carefully pull and curate these trends from their vast depository of saved images, based on repins, likes, staff predictions and blogger influencer input.

Take a look at what's coming down the pipeline ... or isn't going anywhere.

1: Reclaimed Wood

Master Bedroom with Repurposed Wood Wall

Chip and Joanna, of HGTV's Fixer Upper, created a focal point in this master bedroom with a repurposed wood wall. The light wood wall complements the natural wood trim throughout the home, while white bed linens help to soften the space. Large windows allow in plenty of natural light, while a lighted ceiling fan and pendant lights on either side of the bed also help to bring light to the space, making it bright and inviting.

If you’re a a fan of Fixer Upper, then this trend will come as no surprise. It's clear that reclaimed wood is definitely having a moment in the design world. The great thing about this trend is that you can embrace it either with your furniture or decor or by doing something like a reclaimed wood wall.

2: Farmhouse Style

This dynamic leasing office boasts an intriguing mix of design styles. A farm-inspired mural and white paneled walls evoke a farmhouse feel, while bold geometric patterns offer modern attitude.

Another design trend that is front and center right now is rustic, farmhouse style. This trend pairs beautifully with the reclaimed-wood trend. While there are no hard and fast rules for farmhouse style, it tends to embrace lighter, more neutral colors mixed with traditional patterns and quirky decor. It’s the mature, more sophisticated sister of the older shabby-chic design trend. (Sorry, Kayla!)

3: Indoor Vines

Large Kitchen Island Maximizes Kitchen Space

Large Kitchen Island Maximizes Kitchen Space

As seen on HGTV's Fixer Upper, to maximize the space in this kitchen, Joanna added a functional kitchen island to increase seating options and give the family more prep space for meals. Gray cabinets match the gray trim and molding from the rest of the open concept first floor, and rustic stools provide complementary style. A subway tile backsplash polishes off the space, finishing out the design.

Plants are everywhere in design now, and even for those of us with a black thumb, there are many options to consider if you want to bring a bit of life into your space. Succulents are front and center, and they don’t often require a lot of light or water. In particular, the flowing indoor vine is one we're seeing everywhere.

4: Sous Vide Cooking

Forget your slow cooker — sous vide is the hottest new trend in the world of cooking. Pronounced "soo vede," this technique allows you to easily achieve the perfect level of "doneness" for your meats every time you use it. It’s a method that includes partial cooking, followed by vacuum sealing and chilling your food. You can try it on your own (with supplies you likely already have at home), or purchase an all-in-one machine such as the SousVide Supreme.

5: Acrylic Decor

Need easy access to magazines or favorite coffee table books, but worried you'll clutter up end tables and coffee tables? Clear acrylic magazine racks keep everything easily identifiable and within arms reach.

Acrylic, or Lucite, decor has been growing in popularity over the last several years. Because most acrylic is clear, it truly works with almost any type of design style or color scheme. You can bring acrylic into your space by choosing a larger piece, such as a coffee table or console table. Or simply use smaller items, such as this Lucite magazine stand.

6: Navy is the New Black

Contemporary Bedroom with Canopy Bedroom

This contemporary bedroom features a metal canopy bed and a striking piece of art. A navy bedspread contrasts with white walls. A pair of red waterskies adds a pop of color and fun.

If you’re ready to explore a darker color palette for your space, you might want to consider a navy or a deep, inky blue. It works beautifully with all grays, provides a nice, dark pop with a white palette and can even be paired with other brighter colors, such as an apple green or a lighter shade of blue.

7: Adventure Travel

Typical beach vacations are always fun, but travel in 2017 is moving more toward adventure trips that work for both couples and bigger families. In particular, ski destinations are hot right now, particularly in more off-the-beaten-path spots, such as Scotland or Banff. Kyoto, Japan is another travel destination that has been trending.

Another trend that’s growing in popularity is energy healing. Practices such as reiki, a massage technique that uses energy to activate healing in your body, as well as the use of essential oils and crystal rocks are becoming more and more mainstream.

9: Taco Tuesday

The only thing better than tacos are miniature one like these ropa vieja tacos. A variety of fillings and taco shells can be prepared ahead of time, then quickly assembled right before guests arrive.

Themed party nights are something that never seem to go out of style, but tacos are really enjoying a turn in the spotlight. "Taco Tuesday" is regularly trending across social media each week, and Pinterest thinks it will continue to be center stage in the upcoming year as more and more people embrace the idea of entertaining around this delicious, much-loved Mexican street food.

10: Woodland-Themed Nurseries

Over the last several years, more neutral nursery themes have been growing in popularity. Lately, woodland- or forest-themed designs have been popping up quite a bit. And while they certainly can work for a boy’s nursery, the theme is also a great choice for a little girl’s nursery, as well.

11: Magical Fairy Gardens

Much like pop culture with movies and TV shows, gardening trends have also been moving more toward magical themes. And in 2017, the fairy-inspired garden seems to be gaining some traction. Creating a magical, fairy garden full of flowering plants and animals can be a great way to get the kiddos involved outside. And it doesn’t even require a large amount of space to get started.

12: Urban Balcony Gardening

Gardening is not just for those who are lucky enough to have a backyard. Balcony gardens are growing tremendously in popularity, and they're surprisingly easy to put together, even for those who only have a tiny balcony space.

While vintage pieces, in general, are trending right now, pottery pieces are especially popular. Pinterest has caught on to this trend, and they can see that people are loving the idea of incorporating these unique pieces into their decor, no matter what their style is. You can often find some fantastic, reasonably-priced pottery pieces at Goodwill or other types of vintage shops.

14: Offbeat Bachelorette Party Ideas

Crafty brides will adore this DIY nail polish bar. Combine this idea with a spa day, or make it into a nail-centric day of its own. The fun, feminine day will allow plenty of time to chat and dream about the days to come.

Party planning is always a big category on Pinterest, and 2017 might just be the year of the bachelorette party. Unique, non-traditional ideas for these pre-wedding get-togethers are showing up a lot, and the more outrageous the idea the better.

15: Mixology, Cocktails + Bar Carts

Even though Mad Men is officially over, cocktail culture has continued to get more popular over the last few years. Bar carts are showing up in living room and dining room design schemes, and unique cocktail and mocktail recipes are all the rage. The use of fresh herbs in drinks, such as rosemary and basil, is also trending.

16: DIY Gift Wrap

Easily create a chic look by using a few types of papers and ribbons in different hues of the same color.

While it often feels like a lot of pressure to come up with the perfect gift for our loved ones, the presentation can feel just as important. In 2017, the trend is moving away from standard rolls of traditional wrapping paper to a more DIY approach using stamps, paint and natural elements, such as twigs and flowers. So grab a pair of scissors and a glue gun if you want to create a gift that will truly be memorable.
