Think of the word "rustic" and it's hard not to envision a gorgeous woodland with sprawling trees and vibrant nature. The same goes for a rustic kitchen island – while the design is often simplistic, the end result is a beautiful and functional piece.

If your kitchen design features exposed brick walls, wood-lined vaulted ceilings and simple white cabinetry, then you may want to consider a kitchen island that has a simple granite or marble countertop, but is lined with reclaimed wood shelving and a kick space under the island where bar stools will be placed. The overall effect of these materials is warm and inviting.

Other rustic kitchen island designs include wood with an antique or weathered look that adds a farm-to-table feel to the room. Freestanding kitchen islands with seating can be made from simple dark wood materials with stools placed on either side for family-style eating; this style works especially well in a rustic kitchen design.

If repurposed items are available to you, then you might want to consider constructing a kitchen island from old barn doors and topped with a glossy pine counter. Dressers and desks that have been given a subtle shabby chic look can also work well in these rustic kitchen island designs.
