DIY Hand-Painted Boho Jute Rug

The Crafty Lumberjacks used two inexpensive doormats to create this one-of-a-kind jute rug. Taping together the two rugs created a canvas for Andrew and Dennis to glue lengths of jute rug onto. Once dried, the Crafty Lumberjacks used a large stencil to paint a design onto the rug.

Cut Rope

Use the base mat to help measure out the lengths of rope pieces. Stretch out the rope across the width of the mat, leaving two inches overhanging on each side. Repeat until you’ve cut enough rope to cover the base mat. Using sharp, heavy scissors will help prevent fraying.

Glue Rope

Using the caulking gun, add an even line of adhesive along the bottom of the mat and begin gluing down the rope. Make sure the pieces are nice and tight up against each other as you're working to avoid any holes. Repeat until the mat is fully covered. Use heavy books to lay on top of the ends of the rope to help keep it in place until the glue dries overnight.

Create Fringe

Use the edge of the base mat below the rope as a guide and wrap each strand of rope twice with black twine, leaving two inches of rope to fringe. Weave your way from the bottom to the top and tie off at the end. Repeat on the other side. Unwind and fray each strand of rope until you get the desired effect you want. This step is time consuming, so grab a friend to help!

Apply Stencil

Start by taping down the large stencil to the mat. Then, use a stencil brush to apply the acrylic paint in a dabbing motion. Remove the stencil to reveal your handmade, boho jute rug.
