One of the first elements to consider when thinking about a boy's bathroom is color. While there are no hard and fast rules for the use of color in a gender-specific bathroom design, spaces specifically designed for kids often feature bright, bold colors like reds, greens, yellows and blues. The use of color in a boy's bathroom may also be dictated by the age of the boy (or boys) in question — spaces for younger children often feature more playful, vibrant color schemes, whereas those for use by tweens and teens age up a bit, with more nuanced colors and hues featured. Another aspect of color to consider when planning a boy's bathroom is the room's primary intended inhabitant — if he or they have a favorite color or colors, you may consider incorporating those into the design.

Storage is a key aspect of any bathroom design, and it's particularly important when it comes to kids' bathrooms. Though there are surely kids out there who are meticulous, organized and exceedingly neat, they're a rare species. Most kids struggle with keeping any space — let alone one where they bathe, wash and brush — spic and span. Bathroom organizers for toiletries and accessories can go a long way toward keeping things tidy in a boy's bathroom, separating and categorizing the various components of bathroom use and for easy access and — maybe, with any luck — return.

Linens and accessories are a great opportunity to add personality to a boy's bathroom design. Depending on the age range of the boys using the space, you may want to consider themed accessories based on their favorite TV or movie characters, sports, activities or interests. Many home goods retailers offer lines of kid-specific bath accessories (with or without branded characters) or common kid-friendly themes like animals, nature and outer space. For towels and shower curtains, big, bold prints are available featuring all of these themes; they can be a great way to add style and humor to a boys bathroom (shower curtains in particular are available in a wide range of fun and funny aquatic themes).

Wallpaper is another decorative element that can capture a fun, kid-friendly spirit in a boy's bathroom, featuring nature scenes, sports or beloved characters. Artwork is another great option here, whether themed to the interests of the boys in the home, more abstract, or featuring favorite photos of family members.

Furniture in boys' bathrooms can run the gamut from vibrant and playful to more staid and formal, but many parents prefer a kid-themed approach here, too. Wooden or plastic chairs and benches are available in a wide selection of bright and bold colors, and can be a great way to add colorful impact — not to mention function and comfort — to the design.
