A shoe rack that provides multiple shelves for storing your family's shoes and boots is one of the best ways to keep your mudroom's floor from becoming cluttered. You have a wide range of options, from tall metal department-store style racks to smaller racks in painted or natural wood that are part of an overall mudroom organizing system.

A good starting point to get ideas for your mudroom shoe rack is to look at closet storage systems. Closet storage solutions are designed to provide the maximum amount of storage for the available space; they might be your best choice if you expect to accumulate a large number of shoes in your mudroom. You can choose a free-standing rack, or go with a rack that can be hung on the back of your mudroom door.

If you are very limited on space, the best shoe rack for your mudroom may be a fabric hanging shoe organizer, which you can hang from a rod attached to a wall or a mudroom locker. A circular, rotating shoe rack is a stylish solution that can save space while allowing you and your family members easy access to shoes. If you have the space, you might consider multiple round shoe racks, one for each family member.

Alternatively, the ideal shoe rack for your space might include a bench where family members can sit while pulling off muddy boots. This solution is likely to be part of a larger mudroom organizing solution in the form of a hall tree or a bench with hooks for hanging jackets, hats and other items.

You might want to have two shoe racks: one for shoes that are worn outside the house, and one for comfortable slippers that family members can put on when they get home after a long day at work or school. Or, if your space is limited, designate one shelf of a multiple-shelf shoe rack exclusively for slippers. Providing something soft and warm for feet will encourage those in your household to remove dirty shoes and keep dirt from being tracked throughout the house.

Your ideal shoe rack may be part of a larger, free-standing mudroom assembly, constructed of either wood or metal.

For a budget-saving DIY project, purchase storage crates from a craft store and stack them on the floor. They can be painted or left in their natural wood texture. You can also hang the storage crates on a wall of your mudroom for a whimsical, practical and economic storage solution.
