Your dream mudroom may consist of a beautiful hardwood built-in custom design, complete with a sitting bench, lockers and cabinets with doors to hide thing you want out of view. But if your budget is limited, there are still ways to incorporate storage cabinets into your mudroom, either by designing and building something yourself, repurposing old furniture pieces, or buying a stock hall tree or cabinet set that meets your needs.

For the first step in determining what type of cabinet setup is best for you, take stock of how your mudroom is used and decide what you intend to store there. Do your family members participate in sports? If so, you may want lockers or oversized cabinets to store their equipment. Is your mudroom the main entrance to your home? If so, you'll want to incorporate a more finished look into your system.

You may want your cabinets to have doors that close to hide the contents inside, or you may prefer open cubbies into which you can slip pretty baskets to hold gloves, scarves and other items. Your mudroom cabinets can be arranged in a wide variety of configurations to fit your family's needs. Install cabinets with doors high over open lockers, for storage of little-used items. Or you might want a longer closed cabinet to the side of either open shelves or an open locker. An L-shaped configuration in a corner of your mudroom, laundry room or entryway is a great use of space.

You can designate one cabinet as an electronic charging station for mobile phones, tablets and laptops. You may even want closable cabinets under a sitting bench, to keep dust bunnies away from shoes. A collection on fully enclosed cabinets with doors creates a tidy look. But if you have children, an open place where they can easily hang jackets and backpacks on a hook may be your best bet.

After evaluating your needs, research the many configuration options online and in stores. You can buy new or upcycle a used piece of furniture. If you have an artistic bent and plan to paint your mudroom cabinets, paint the name of the person to whom each cabinet belongs on the door for a personalized touch. Or, for a truly creative touch, turn each cabinet door into a painting of your own design.
