Get to Know Carolyn and Billy
Carolyn Is a Designer
Carolyn originally studied broadcast journalism. She worked in the restaurant industry for years, but when she bought a house with her husband and started decorating and designing it, she discovered her love for design. She went to night school to study interior decorating and redesign, and her business, CW Design & Co. (formerly called Small Town Style), was born.
Billy Is a Contractor
After taking a shop class in high school, Billy discovered he loved carpentry. He’s been working in construction for nearly two decades now.
They Grew Up on a Farm
On their family’s farm in Waterdown, Ontario, the siblings learned what it takes to keep a farm running — including the work that goes into maintaining and restoring a farmhouse.
Family Is Important to Them
Carolyn writes on her blog that being a mom to her four kids is one of her greatest joys. Plus, hard work keeps their family close: Carolyn and Billy’s dad, Alec, also helps with renovations on Farmhouse Facelift and does many of the repairs on his own farm. "You can’t beat working with your family," Alec says on the show.
They Take Restoration Seriously
Since Carolyn and Billy often work on farmhouses that date back centuries and have been lived in for generations, they know their clients are looking for an update that respects the memories and histories the houses hold. So, they scour their favorite antique stores to find unique elements — like 100-year-old dressers to turn into bathroom vanities and flooring made from reclaimed hardwood, joists and trusses.
… But They Value Modern Touches
Amenities like heated flooring in a mudroom add comfort that brings these historic farmhouses into the 21st century. Billy and Carolyn know the homeowners want a chance to make the houses their own — adding an island and opening walls to dark, segmented kitchens to make them brighter, more open and user-friendly, for instance.
