Catch Up on 'Totally '90s House': Weekly Wins, Updates and More

Totally '90s House is here, and it's a home renovation competition of epic (and totally radical) proportions. The stars who defined '90s television spent the decade in everyone’s living rooms. Now they're about to transform one. The premise: Two teams of '90s stars go head-to-head, giving their chosen '90s-style homes a serious glow-up — while "keeping it real" the entire way. You got it, dudes!

September 9 Episode: Suite Nostalgia

The primary bedroom and closet took center stage this week. Jaleel once again rallied Team Curtains and Team Mauve (via VHS) to remind them the ‘90s is a "decade of frosted tips and frosted glass" — and it was their job to fix it.

With just $30,000 to spend and seven days to get it done, the teams were pumped to get this party started. There was just one catch: The teams had to pick one thing in the room to salvage and upcycle. Jaleel said it best, "It’s time to turn up the heat."

Team Curtains: Keshia, Matthew and Melissa

Let's go ahead and state the obvious: Team Curtains had their work cut out for them on this challenge. "This room is incredibly '90s, from the burgundy wall-to-wall carpet to the salmon wall color to the valence on the window," Keshia said.

These three '90s legends transformed the primary bedroom into a bright, airy space, adding beams to the vaulted ceiling while keeping homeowner Patti's ethereal, girly feel intact with an updated canopy bed. The closet lost its fluorescent tubes for brand-new hardwood floors and, speaking of floors, the team found wood hiding underneath all that burgundy carpet. Totally tubular! Their biggest accomplishment, though, was upcycling Patti's straight-from-the-'90s armoire, using its face to create an entryway into the closet. Mentor Carter lent a hand, but it was Matthew's carpentry that blew him away: "Matt's got some serious skills as a carpenter, and I know that's going to help us in these challenges." A fabric moment rounded out the room's nod to the decade.

Guest judges Brian and Mika Kleinschmidt, hosts of 100 Day Dream Home, walked away obsessed. They loved the fabric patterns throughout, calling the space nostalgic. The armoire-turned-closet-entrance was a clear favorite for Brian: "It's no longer a question mark, it's an exclamation point."

It wasn't a perfect score, though. Mika wanted an extra layer of color worked into the beams, and the judges felt the bed's placement missed the view out the window — no surprise, given the team's feng shui struggles from Day One. Their biggest critique, though, involved the attic door in the closet. "I just wish this could have been relocated or camouflaged," Brian told Carter.

Team Mauve: Beverley, Brian and Jodie

As far as matching elements go, Team Mauve's house had it covered. "[The homeowner] really took cohesive to a whole other level," Jodie noted, pointing to a comforter that matched almost every other element in the primary bedroom. Since our '90s icons wanted to carry the modern Mediterranean theme throughout the house, they set out to create a space that felt serene and peaceful with a lime wash finish on the walls, a recessed arch with built-in lighting and a custom upholstered headboard.

This team had a few other tricks up their sleeve, though. Brian took on the task of calling Team Curtains' landline to leave voice messages, and Beverley and Jodie joined in on the fun, leaving no less than 43 messages. Are we the only ones that remember prank calls?

To check the upcycled-item box, Team Mauve refurbished the family's old rocking chair and added a memory collage to the closet. "That DIY decoupage collage is going to be a very special moment because they love their family so much," Beverley said.

Luckily, the judges agreed. "What a transformation," Brian said. Mika pointed out the design's decade-relevance: "Arches were really popular in the '90s, and they are making a comeback." The headboard and lime wash walls were standout favorites, and Brian noted that the sentimental elements elevated the whole space. Their only complaint? "I wish we could see the collage more."

And with that, Team Mauve took home their first win and $1,000 to donate to their charity (Habitat for Humanity) — but not before Mika finally got to fangirl. "Maybe a couple of the brothers were in my bedroom back in the day," she said. All jokes aside, the teams are now tied. If this were a '90s sitcom, we'd cut to commercial.

September 2 Episode: Pooka Shells and Plot Twists

There's only one way to break renovation news on this show: a pager and a VHS tape. In episode two, Jaleel used both to give teams the green light to de-90-ify their homes. So, Team Mauve and Team Curtains got started. They had $70,000 and seven days to bring their kitchens into this decade.

But this is a show about the '90s, so Jaleel couldn't resist "stirring things up" with a field trip that involved pooka shell necklaces. (Countertops were also involved.) Between tight deadlines, the arrival of mentors Carter Oosterhouse and Sabrina Soto, and guest judge Vern Yip, this episode was anything but chill.

Team Mauve: Beverley, Brian and Jodie

The mauve carpet might be leaving soon, but Team Mauve isn't going anywhere. Beverley, Brian and Jodie dove in headfirst, choosing a modern Mediterranean theme to tie in with their homeowners' Greek background. With a vision for a massive island, a double oven and floating cabinets around the sink window, they planned to make a big impact in the space.

Their mentor, Sabrina, stepped in to assist, but not without catching up with an old fling: "Brian and I were actually married when I was in high school — in my dreams — so it was nice to see him again." The team did hit a snag when piecing the cabinets together. Jodie, always one to call it like she sees it, pointed out, "This is like a very bad game of Tetris." Brian even put his self-taught carpentry skills to work. How many '90s stars does it take to put together a kitchen? Apparently three. In the end, Beverley was ecstatic with the results, exclaiming, "This is slowly becoming my dream kitchen."

Guest judge and HGTV legend Vern arrived. He would be judging the teams on three criteria: creativity, overall design and nods to the '90s.

"It’s so different," Vern said of the new kitchen. "It’s not even the same space." He loved the warm wood tones, Mediterranean feel and quartz countertops. (Fun fact: Quartz countertops didn't exist in the '90s.) Team Mauve also included a sketch of the family's original corded phone as a special tribute to their story. Vern's one critique: the layout skipped the functional triangle most kitchens rely on.

Team Curtains: Keshia, Matthew and Melissa

Team Curtains had nothing but curveballs this week. After winning Jaleel's pooka shell necklace scavenger hunt and securing $5,000 worth of free countertops, they told the other team to "talk to the hand." The ego boost came to an abrupt halt, however, when Melissa had another work commitment pull her away from the renovation. But she phoned a friend to step in — and the '90s answered. Joey Lawrence arrived, surprising both Keshia and his own brother, Matthew. Shades of Brotherly Love were apparent immediately, especially when Matthew had to remind Joey it’s "not cool" to carry him around the construction site. "They are grown-up versions of their little selves, which is hilarious," Keshia said. Looks like this team is going to be alright.

Team Curtains pressed on with the original plan: turning this maxed-out '90s kitchen into a coastal cottage, complete with cabinets extending up to the ceiling, mixed-metal fixtures and a '90s-style cream-on-cream checkerboard floor. Their mentor Carter showed up just in time to help with the new French doors — and he took a moment to fangirl. "I'm going to try not to freak out for a moment and play it cool, but you guys are the dream team," he said.

Then, it was time for Vern to judge. "This is a new house," he said. He loved the island added to the center of the kitchen, which gave the space the circulation it needed. The mixed-metal French range "mixed the shiny and brash in a sleek, timeless way," showcasing the team's creativity. The tone-on-tone checkerboard floor really sealed the deal, though. It was a perfect nod to the '90s in an updated fashion.

The week one win was given to Team Curtains, who also earned $1,000 to donate to the charity of their choice (World Wildlife Fund). It was a close call, but the smarter layout edged them to the finish. Booyah!

'90s Fun Fact: Jaleel White and Brian Austin Green both auditioned for Saved by the Bell. "Brian and I go all the way back to the pilot for Saved by the Bell," said Jaleel. "And we both got fired for it. I think it worked out for everyone."

August 26 Episode: The '90s Called

In episode one, the battle to help two "aggressively of their era" '90s homes embrace this decade officially began. (Those are host Jaleel White's words, not ours.) Jaleel welcomed six faces every '90s kid will recognize and divided them into teams. Team one: Beverley Mitchell, Brian Austin Green and Jodie Sweetin. Team two: Keshia Knight Pulliam, Matthew Lawrence and Melissa Joan Hart.

Before the renovations could begin, the team had to choose between two homes to renovate and agree on exactly how much '90s baggage they were signing up to fix. Brian summed up the importance of this decision best: "I feel like we're in a '90s video game, and we’re picking our battle weapon right now."

Team Mauve: Beverley, Brian and Jodie

This team hit the road to Mullica Hill, New Jersey, and surprised homeowners Anna and Nikolaos Yiantsos, who built their house back in 1991. Spoiler alert: they hadn't touched it since. Anna was quick to point out the elephant in the room. "There's a lot of mauve carpet," she said — and she wasn't exaggerating. From the mauve staircase to the scalloped sinks and pickled wood finishes, this home was a full-body immersion into the '90s.

Even the textiles were in on the theme. The comforter matched the valances, which matched the couch. "This looks like an episode of The Golden Girls," Brian joked as he captured the entire experience on a camcorder. He also pointed out the enormous tub in the main suite did have its perks: "I love having pool parties in my bathtub at my house." (Nineties meter score: Off the Charts + Full '90s McMansion)

Next up, Team Mauve crossed the country to Los Angeles to meet Sean Le, whose home hadn't been renovated since 1992. Between the pull-out television in the kitchen, the Art Deco bathroom that was "straight out of Scarface" and a black shell sink that sent Jodie down memory lane (John Stamos had an infamous black bathroom), there was no shortage of nostalgic materials. Downstairs, a step-down party room with a built-in bar had Brian rethinking everything he thought he knew about the decade. "The '90s architecture was way more specific than I remember it being," he said. With black accents everywhere, an open flow that surprisingly worked and full-on '90s man-cave energy, it was clear this home was once somebody's dream bachelor pad. Team Curtains: Keshia, Matthew and Melissa

This team headed to St. Louis, Missouri, to meet Sahar Agnew, who bought the house she grew up in from her parents, hoping to make it hers. Don't worry, the '90s vibes were alive and thriving. Think: a double staircase, a ceiling mural and honey oak wood covering practically every surface of the massive home. "This is like an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond," Melissa said.

However, it was the bathroom that really sealed the deal on the '90s motif. A green toilet, green sink, green tub and green bidet? Gnarly. Keshia was crunching numbers while Matthew and Melissa took it all in: "If you up the square footage, you up the cost dramatically for a renovation." Next, the team made its way to Long Island, New York, to meet Patti DeLeo, who built her house in 1989 and, as a single mom, never got around to renovating. "This Long Island house is quintessential '90s style," Melissa said — and she wasn't lying. The team was greeted with light pink valences, pink picture frames, pink walls in the dining room and, of course, skylights. Did we mention the carpet color changed from room to room on the second floor? There was even a tape cassette player waiting to be discovered. "I'll make you both a mixtape," Melissa joked before getting a little sentimental. "There was something so special about the '90s. It was the last analog decade." Back at home base, it was decision time. After touring four houses steeped in questionable countertop choices and even more questionable carpet, both teams had to pick their "battle weapon."

Beverley, Brian and Jodie went with the Mullica Hill home — mauve carpet, matching valances and all — officially crowning themselves Team Mauve. Keshia, Matthew and Melissa chose the Long Island house, the one with curtains Keshia knew from childhood. Naturally, Team Curtains was born.

And so the epic battle begins: The winning team will walk away with bragging rights and a $25,000 donation to the charity of their choice. But for Melissa, that's not really the point. "What is at stake here?" she asked. "Our pride."

Cue the dial-up, demo day is loading.
