Baby’s on Board With Momma’s Grand Plan

Melissa wants to give her husband, New York City firefighter Michael, one last gift before their first child, a daughter, is born. To do just that, she calls in House Shock’s designer Arielle Vandenberg and contractor Steve Lewis to their circa-1950s Albertson, New York, home. As an avid chef, Michael has become frustrated by their kitchen’s lack of space, from having to prep on a stovetop butcher block to a fridge that juts out.

Arielle dreams up a color-drenched culinary canteen fit for Michael’s big personality and appetite. By opening up the kitchen into the adjoining eating area (and relocating the fridge), she’s able to achieve the space the couple has longed for and give them more seating with a banquette. Instead of plain counters, Arielle decides on butcher blocks throughout, so there’s no shortage of places to prep.

Cushioning the Blow

In order to get Michael out of the house for two days, Melissa enlists her father-in-law, Tony, and Michael’s brother-in-law, Jason, for a boys’ weekend upstate. He’s tempted to come home early, though, but Melissa is able to convince him to keep on fishing. It's a welcome relief for Arielle and Steve after two hectic days — including demo delays and missing cabinets — of making over the kitchen. While Michael makes his way back to Melissa, Arielle puts the finishing touches on the banquette, and Steve and his crew shine up the butcher blocks.

Shock and Awe

Even though he’s instantly suspicious after being greeted by Melissa, Arielle, Steve and a camera crew, Michael doesn’t have time to wonder what’s going on. After dropping his golf clubs by the door, he’s led to their new kitchen and, amid his utter appreciation, Michael says, “Oh no, they didn’t!” When Melissa first met Arielle, she said she wanted to “knock [her husband’s] socks off for the next two decades” — and, by his reaction, she’s done just that.

Begone Kitchen Nightmares

The serene sage green, which Michael is a fan of, brings the antiquated kitchen up to date in the best way. The multi-hued butcher blocks enrich the overall palette and are perfect for prepping dinner for the two (soon to be three!) of them or for hosting parties. “You just need charcuterie, because you’ve got the board already,” Steve says.

A New — And Irresistible — View

One thing Melissa requested at the start of the process was to keep the glass-topped table adjacent to the kitchen, because she loves to dine while looking out the window. Arielle is able to maintain the view and add extra seating at the same time with a padded banquette. That’s not all the new room has to offer. While most of the appliances stayed in their original places, the fridge moved to the dining area and doubled in size. What was once a nuisance is now an optical illusion hidden by complementary faux-wood paneling.

Move Aside, Big Poppa, This Is Big Daddy’s Kitchen

To top off an already amazing surprise, Arielle had the idea to make Michael’s favorite kitchen tool even more special by engraving it with his self-given nickname, Big Daddy. She and Melissa took it to a local shop, which made quick work of the request. Once relegated to a subpar storage spot, Michael’s knife now hangs on full view on the kitchen wall.

A Cut Above the Rest

Hidden in plain sight, Michael’s made-over knife is the last thing he notices during the reveal. He confesses that eight years ago, when he and Melissa purchased their home, he started calling himself Big Daddy. Now that he’s upgrading from husband to father, the timing is perfect for a public acknowledgment of his beloved moniker.

From a Baby Bump to a Fist Bump

As they walk out the door of another swift and successful surprise renovation, Steve and Arielle can’t help but congratulate themselves. Not only did they improve Melissa and Michael’s kitchen in the present, in a way, but they also changed the life of their soon-to-arrive daughter by providing a place to cook together and commune as a family.
