Create a Meadow for Child's Play

A meadow is hard to maintain in a small yard, so this is a project that most suits larger spaces. Use a glyphosate-based weedkiller to clear the area of weeds and grasses. Once the ground is clear, broadcast-sow seed in the fall or spring.

Leucanthemum Vulgare

Leucanthemum vulgare, or oxeye daisy, is a perennial that produces up to 40 flowering stems. Flowering occurs all summer, when daisy-like flower heads develop. Oxeye daisies thrive in a wide variety of soil types and can grow in sun to partial shade.

Papaver Rhoea

Papaver rhoeas, or red poppy, is a common meadow annual that lives just one year. It grows quickly, blooms heavily and dies with first frost. It can regrow the following spring if seeds fall on bare ground.

Agrostemma Githago

Agrostemma githago is a favorite cottage garden flower that produces hundreds of blooms on slender, upright stems. It bears 2-inch satiny bright rose blossoms with white throats and subtle radiating black dotted lines.

Centaurea Cyanus

Centaurea cyanus, or cornflower, is a cool-weather annual that is easily grown in medium moisture, well drained soils in full sun to light shade. Purple-blue flowers bloom from late spring into summer and attract butterflies.

Chrysanthemum Segetum

Chrysanthemum segetum, or corn marigold, puts forth flowers with yellow petals and mahogany centers. They have a bushy, branching habit and bear clustered flower heads that are perfect for the border.

Anthemis Punctata

Anthemis punctata is a woody based, evergreen perennial forming a loose aromatic mat, with finely dissected silvery foliage and yellow centered white daisies. This plant is happy to grow and bloom all summer in a sunny spot.
