Overhead Racks

If you’ve already maximized all the space on your garage walls and floors, try storing overhead. SafeRacks’ overhead racks hold up to 600 pounds, which makes them ideal for heavy items like tires or garden furniture.

Storage Pulley System

This pulley system from Racor allows you to gain access to your overhead storage bins without hauling out a ladder. It’s perfect for items that you want out of sight but still readily available.

Overhead Loft

Wendy Edwards of Designed to Dwell took advantage of her 10-foot ceiling by building a loft to store camping equipment, golf clubs and other belongings. She nailed 2x4s to the wall studs to create a built-in ladder.

Organized Extension Cords

Don’t let tangled extension cords take over your garage floor. The wall-mounted Wonder Winder keeps extension cords neatly coiled and ready to dispense. It holds up to 150 feet of cord.

Folding Worktable

Fold-up workbenches like this one from Bench Solution are a perfect solution to space-challenged garages. Just tuck away the table surface when finished with your project.

DIY Tool Storage

Kim Woodward of Newly Woodwards drilled two pieces of PVC tubing to the wall to create a DIY tool holder. It’s a simple solution for organizing your shovels, rakes and other handled garden tools. See her tutorial at Newly Woodwards.

Behind the Garage Door

Don’t overlook the garage door as a place to tuck away gear. This storage system from Cobra provides a perfectly unobtrusive home for fishing rods.

Cover your wall with pegboard and hang anything from tools to bins of bolts. Wall Control offers metal pegboards in bold, attractive colors.

Track System

This versatile track system from Rubbermaid is a handy alternative to pegboards. The rail-mounted hooks, baskets and cabinets provide easy storage for space-hogging items like paint cans and folding chairs.

Stud Storage

Wendy Edwards of Designed to Dwell made good use of the space between studs by nailing simple slats and shelves to the studs. Since all of the storage is recessed into the wall, it takes up zero square feet on the floor.

Hanging Tool Cabinet

If you lack the floor space for full-size cabinets, try a hanging cabinet like this one from Rubbermaid. As part of the FastTrack Garage Organization System, these cabinets store supplies without taking up precious floor space.

Freestanding Bike Rack

There’s nothing like a pile of bikes to thwart attempts at garage organization. Use a freestanding bike rack, such as this one from The Container Store, to stow your bikes neatly in a corner.

Floor-to-Ceiling Bins

Meghan Bresnyan of Sweet B Organizing designed a floor-to-ceiling shelving unit in her Sonoma client’s garage to accommodate large bins filled with extra linens and overflow utility items. Each bin is clearly labeled by family member and room number.

Sports Equipment Rack

Designate some bins to store all those soccer balls, basketballs and baseball bats. These durable mesh storage bins from The Container Store are designed to keep sporting goods contained and organized.

Tool Caddy

Keep gardening equipment all in one place with this mobile tool caddy from Gardener’s Supply Company. Store the caddy in a corner and roll it out when it’s gardening time.
