Materials Needed

  • wood boards
  • pickling stain
  • paint brush
  • cloth
  • chalk
  • jute
  • scissors
  • hot glue gun + hot glue

Prep Board

The first step in creating a rope sign is to add color to the wood pieces being used. The size of the wood piece used will be determined by the amount of space you have to fill. Visually split the board in two and begin to cover the top half in a layer of light-hued pickling stain. Let the stain sit for approximately 30 seconds before wiping the surface with a cloth. Cover the bottom half of the wood piece using the same techniques but with another color stain.

Draw Word

Whether you prefer an inspirational word, a silly note or a unique design, trace the shape onto the surface of the wood using chalk.

Add Rope

Once the word, phrase or image has been chosen and written onto the wood piece, it’s time to add the jute. Manipulate the jute by cutting small pieces off and attaching them to the wood with hot glue. Once the entire shape has been covered with rope, trim off any excess jute and polish off the sign.
