Creating the Perfect Living Room
Most of us spend ample time in our living rooms — watching HGTV, hosting friends and family, playing games — so aesthetic and comfort matters. Of course, no one knows how to create a homey, welcoming space better than HGTV stars. Here, we’ve compiled some of their best living room decorating tips for every home size, style and budget.
Hang Curtains High
Property Brothers Jonathan and Drew Scott know how to make a space feel larger. In this living room makeover from Celebrity IOU (from late comedian Leslie Jordan to his close friends), they made sure the lush, cream-colored curtains almost touched the ceiling. This little trick magnifies the size of the windows and makes the ceilings feel higher.

Shop for Budget-Friendly Fixtures
For this gallery wall, Home Town co-host Erin Napier blended styles, pairing a trophy deer head with a collection of mismatched vintage mirrors. Erin, who touts tasteful, low-cost decorating solutions, created the window treatments from ordinary hardware-store drop cloths, with a total fabric expenditure of just $10 per window.

Marry Modern with Vintage
Decorate to complement statement antique pieces and family heirlooms, like Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent did here on Season 1 of The Nate and Jeremiah Home Project. With a careful eye on that creamy set of antique cabinets, the designers carried the trim work and light colors throughout the rest of the space. Velvet blue and brown chairs add depth with color while marrying new furnishings with the vintage, Victorian-inspired ones.

Consider Scaling Up in Size
Nate and Jeremiah go big. Here, expansive, deep sofas beneath high skylights provide an area for the family to kick back and relax, while large-scale, framed artwork decorates the tallest wall in this living room.

Create a Theme Around Shapes
It's no coincidence most of the furniture and corresponding decorations in this Rock the Block living have curved elements. Bargain Block’s Keith Bynum and Evan Thomas wanted to create a natural, flowing design, which they pulled off with curved couches, circular tabletops, round lighting and ovular windows. “I think [this is] maybe the most dramatic room I’ve ever done,” Keith said.

Make Your Lighting Matter
With its coffered ceilings and classic decor, the living room in Egypt Sherrod's previous Georgia home was, to say the least, chic. The Married to Real Estate co-host replaced the original fireplace with a custom one featuring a massive cast-stone mantel. A statement chandelier and recessed lighting brightens up the space. Built-in bookcases lined with grass cloth elevate the already glam look.

Incorporate Setting Into the Design
One look at the living room of Jasmine Roth's rustic living room and we know we've stepped into a cozy cabin in the woods. The Help! I Wrecked My House designer decorated this space with materials one might find on a nature walk. The fireplace mantel is reclaimed wood, and the surround is architectural stone veneer (by Eldorado Stone) cast from molds of real stone. "The wood ceiling feels so organic and special. It took four days to sand down, and now it’s gorgeous," wrote Jasmine in HGTV Magazine.

Use Every Nook and Cranny
Under the stairs of Jasmine's Huntington Beach, California, living room, she installed built-ins for a play area for her toddler. More built-in shelving on the back wall makes for extra space to store toys and display books and accessories. There's even a special, out-of-the-way spot for the family's piano. The coolest part: the crossword feature wall. "The minute I spotted a photo on Instagram of a word search design on a wall, I knew I had to create our own in a big way. It makes this whole room — and teaches [my daughter] her ABC’s," Jasmine wrote in HGTV Magazine.

Inspire a Fresh Look With Natural Elements
Mina Starsiak Hawk of Good Bones incorporated natural elements into the decorations around this electric fireplace of her Rock the Block living room, including plants, a straw basket, sculptures made out of glass and ceramic and a wood-framed mirror above the mantel.

Try an Asymmetrical Layout
Mina has the perfect formula for open living rooms with almost too much potential. The furnishings: one sofa, two chairs (matched or mismatched) and one coffee table. How to pull it off: While paying close attention to the shape and size of the room, arrange the sofa and chairs on opposite sides of the space, facing each other. Then, slide the coffee table into the center of your seating setup.

Create Contrast
For Egypt and her husband Mike Jackson's winning house on Season 3 of Rock the Block, the duo added depth to their feature wall in the living room by painting the insets above their built-ins a deep, rich black. They also created movement by adding four room-spanning ceiling beams. Relocated French doors allow for plenty of sunlight in the Charleston home.

Embrace Textured Materials
Textiles bring depth and comfort to a space and create an earthy farmhouse feel. In this cozy living room by Farmhouse Fixer's Jonathan Knight and Kristina Crestin, green velvet window treatments add elegance, while new pine hardwood floors layered with a woven, neutral rug bring the bright. A freshly slipcovered sofa and plush chairs outdo the now-departed futon, a perfect fit for country life.

Make a Statement With the Mantel
Though the fireplace wasn’t salvageable in this Arkansas home, its mantel certainly was. On Season 2 of Fixer to Fabulous, Dave and Jenny Marrs refurbished the original mantel of this living room. Against the shiplap feature wall, it's now an eye-catching centerpiece.

Create a Soothing Ambiance With Unconventional Colors
Jenny was given full creative control over this home remodel, and she transformed the dated space with a fresh design. Keeping the fireplace wall as the focal point of the living room, she painted it a soothing blue-gray. A custom-built, black-walnut mantel and firebox bring in refined architectural detail.

Design Around the Art You Love
A space to display artwork was a must-have for these homeowners, so Dave created custom built-ins with a special section to display pieces from the couple's collection. The sage-green built-ins also provide plenty of storage.

Add Vintage Touches
Lyndsay Lamb and her twin sister Leslie Davis of Unsellable Houses found the mantel of their Season 3 Rock the Block home at a historic estate sale. It's from 1813! They brought it up to fire code and repainted it white. Now, the space boasts extra charm. Bonus: Leslie installed a wet bar (complete with built-in cabinets) to the left of the fireplace. In total, they spent $7,170 of their budget on the very grand fireplace area.

Reflect the Space
Jenn Todryk opened up this living room from Season 1 of No Demo Reno with one simple accessory: an oversized mirror. The large-scale decorative accessory accentuates the open and dramatic feel of the space. The vintage rug helps tie together the colors of the room.

Go for Faux
Instead of real wood beams, Alison Victoria and Mike Holmes of Windy City Rehab opted for faux beams in their French countryside-inspired Rock the Block home. Though the faux beams were still pricey, at $3,300, they're a more cost-effective alternative and connected the kitchen and living room right to the focal point: the fireplace.

Divide the Room With a Sectional Chaise
By configuring a sofa, two center sections and an armless chaise to create the world’s coziest U, the Scott brothers create a distinct but not closed-off living room during this Property Brothers: Forever Home makeover from Season 7. A thoughtful color story supports that move: Deep indigo that carries through the sectional’s throws, the area rug and the Roman shades pull the space together.

Build Out a Library Nook
Even just a corner of the living room works for this one. My Lottery Dream Home's David Bromstad and HGTV Smart Home designer Tiffany Brooks created a cozy library nook with built-in shelves in their Season 1 Rock the Block home. They painted the inset wall and shelving navy blue and arranged cozy seating conveniently out of the way.
