Be Flexible With Your Design
Sometimes, the best design ideas are born out of necessity. Galey’s original vision for this guest house was to cover the space in deep brown grasscloth wallpaper. Unfortunately, she couldn’t find enough grasscloth to make it happen. Enter cork wallpaper — the now focal point of that chicly textured accent wall behind the luxury sleeper sofa. Wood trim work punctuates the space with bold lines.

Redefine the Classics
Take typical architectural elements to new heights by rethinking appearance. For this bedroom remodel, Galey installed reclaimed wooden planks inside the existing tray ceiling. In addition to bringing the height of the ceiling down to a cozier level, the planks also add charming ambiance to the space.

Go Large Scale
Galey knows how to make an impression. For this bathroom remodel, she lined the walls with large slabs of stone, delivering opulent style and water-ready functionality. Tucked in the corner next to the shower and bathtub, she added a petite vanity perfect for spa-prep time or getting ready.

Double Up on Function
Flex spaces are not easily defined and can often become a hodgepodge of furniture and activities. Here, Galey gave this loft space a true purpose (or two!). A double built-in desk provides ample room for work, finishing up homework or completing a project. In the center of the room, Galey set up a fun hangout spot with oversized chairs for watching television, chatting or reading a book.

Stay Creative
Ready for the surprise of this room? That fireplace isn’t actually “real” or functioning. Galey wanted to design a cozy space where this family could gather, but because they live in Florida, a wood-burning fireplace wasn’t a necessity. So Galey built one out of foam. To comprise an authentic concrete look, she covered the build in Venetian plaster, then added brick to highlight the arch and firebox. Candles deliver lovely warmth to the space.

Go Big, Finish Small
Galey typically transforms a home in 72 hours, but sometimes a little extra time and help is necessary. Before she could start getting creative, the exterior of this home needed to be repainted. As well, the patio pavers needed replacing. Once those two big projects were tackled, she came in and devised a comfy lounge area, complete with concrete fire pit under a new cedar pergola.

Use Architecture to Your Benefit
Galey made this room feel taller with wall coverings: The vertical molding she installed in this bedroom instantly added the illusion of height to the space. To expand the width or length of a room, install architectural details horizontally.
Mirror Your Design
Symmetry creates that take-a-deep-breath moment when you walk into a room. Here, Galey paired a wall-to-wall double vanity with matching vessel sinks, octagon mirrors and contemporary, black sconces — aesthetically pleasing and physically calming. Slim linear tiles laid in a classic herringbone pattern add style underfoot.
Work With What You Have
The number one trick for saving during a remodel: Use what you already have. The custom-built bookshelves in this office were definitely worth saving — they just needed a little updating. Galey outfitted the bottom shelves with dark green cabinet doors, creating chic hidden storage. Then she painted the rest of the built-ins glossy black for an uber-moody vibe. A beautiful, functional desk centers the space under an antler chandelier.
Use Your Natural Resources
To highlight the vaulted ceiling of this living and dining room, Galey installed her classic natural wood beams — with a twist. Instead of staining the beams, she aged them by rolling them in dirt and denting them with stones. The result: antiqued beams without the price tag.
Layer on the Texture
Fill your bedroom with an abundance of tactile appeal for the ultimate cozy factor. Navy-blue grasscloth wallpaper sets the scene for this main bedroom, which is bursting with texture: chunky knits, clean cottons, tufted wool, natural woods and even a branch-made pendant light.
Take Advantage of Nooks
No awkward, unused spaces here. Galey maximized the wall of this laundry room by building a glass cabinet with drawers for storing laundry basics. A small pantry area, featuring open shelving with baskets, keeps household essentials tucked away and organized.
Make Use of Little Corners
In the main bedroom, Galey turned the unused area next to a bay window into a small workspace. Built into the wall and suspended with ropes from the ceiling, the desk — paired with a comfy woven chair — adds an airiness to the space.
Plan Around Screens
We all use them, but they’re not — shall we say — aesthetically pleasing. This homeowner needs three computer screens while working from home, but Galey didn’t let it dissuade her from coming up with a clever design. She created a custom accent wall featuring the screens, which now blend seamlessly into the room. A cozy seating area is ready for visits with clients.
Play With Seating
Modular seating is a clever way to create a flexible space that works for a myriad of activities. Galey redesigned this living space with easy-to-move barstools and poufs. Now, the room can host a crowd of people, an intimate gathering or a quiet night of one.
