Choosing a paint color can seem like serious business. The right shade sets the tone for an entire design, and if it's been years since a space underwent a refresh, landing on a swatch to do the job can feel like a lot of pressure. The Dutch Boy Trendsight Team, who decide the company’s Color of the Year, totally get it. But their research suggests an alternative approach for picking paint colors in 2027: Release that furrowed brow and have some much-needed fun.

“Joy is emerging as a key emotion in 2027. People are seeking moments of play, and play really has no age limit,” says Lisbeth Parada, color marketing manager at Dutch Boy’s parent company, Sherwin Williams. Alongside a push for more joy and playfulness, the research also showed a trend toward more empathy and community. People are hoping to foster more human connection in the coming year, trading screen time and digital footprints for face-to-face interactions and time outdoors.

Dutch Boy's 2027 Color of the Year: Deep Rooted

With these themes in mind, Dutch Boy revealed their 2027 Color of the Year to be Deep Rooted (311-7DB), a pigmented orange akin to a terracotta pot being warmed by the sun at golden hour. It’s a shade that’s calming yet affirming, the paint equivalent of planting yourself in the moment.

“All of these driving influences have converged into one singular color that represents a growing need for kindness, for community and for what’s real,” Lisbeth continues. “Deep Rooted radiates a sense of grounded optimism and brings a sense of comfort to the home.”

How to Use Deep Rooted at Home

“Deep Rooted feels like an honest color for spaces that we want to feel lived in and authentic,” Lisbeth says. “It has a sense of stability and enduring beauty.”

For those who want to express joy on the exterior of their property, Dutch Boy also recommends pairing Deep Rooted with the brand's warm-toned Twig exterior stain. No matter how you choose to play, Dutch Boy’s Color of the Year collection presents a cohesive way to remove decision fatigue and go all in on the fun of a fresh start.
