Fresh Inspiration by Nate and Jeremiah
In this season of Home Project, Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent bring new definition to coming home. “Filling a home with meaning is the most important part,” says Nate. “We start the process by doing a massive edit of a family’s old belongings and preserve what’s most important. We want to deliver homes that feel exactly like the people who live in them.”
Join in as they transform ordinary homes into luxurious, custom spaces catering to the families’ stories, memories and values. Enjoy spaces of all kinds, from kitchen transformations and master suite makeovers, to modern family rooms and fun playrooms. Get insight into how you can incorporate heirlooms and antiques into modern home design.
Elevating a Split-Level Home with a Lofted Ceiling
Nate and Jeremiah transformed a formerly enclosed living room in a split-level ranch into an open concept living area. Wooden paneling on the ceiling helps it feel warm and cozy, while ample storage and comfortable seating make the room functional, livable and relaxing. A rolling library ladder allows the homeowners to access high shelves and adds appeal. Nearby the living room, the designers incorporated a dining area adjacent to the new galley kitchen.
Modern Upgrades in a Galley Kitchen
Hand-crafted maroon tiles were installed as a feature backsplash in this modern galley kitchen. White-washed wood cabinets with matte black door pulls above one side of the kitchen add storage. A long quartz countertop with marble veining promises the family plenty of space to cook and bake together. A new gas range is accompanied by a gold kettle faucet to add function to the kitchen.
New Windows Brighten a Galley Kitchen
This kitchen gets an A+ for its natural lighting, which says a lot, as narrow galley kitchens don't often score high points in that category. Skylights, a window over the sink and a fixed pane at the end of the kitchen make the room feel open and inviting. Light wood floors, white-washed wood cabinetry and white walls help to bounce the light in every direction. As an extension of the home’s new open concept design, anyone working in the kitchen can also feel a part of what’s happening in the living room.
Midcentury Appeal in a Master Bedroom
Vertical striped wallpaper and wood flooring are the perfect canvases for the midcentury-inspired master bedroom designed by Nate and Jeremiah. A large dresser, floor-to-ceiling rust-colored curtains, and a statement-worthy scalloped platform bed add function and warmth to the small bedroom. The team also incorporated lighting fixtures that include hanging glass pendants over each bedside table and a colorful era-appropriate light over the bed.
A Romantic Master Suite
From the pink velvet armchairs to the charcoal painted walls, this redesigned master bedroom screams modern romanticism. A flawlessly placed picture rail offers an opportunity to use a light gray paint across the ceiling. For contrast, the designers chose white trim and included a white canopy bed, light bed linens and a neutral area rug.
A Spacious Walk-in Closet
Nate and Jeremiah incorporated next-level storage and function to a walk-in closet in a master suite. Wrap-around built-in shelving and a center island with storage offer space for the homeowners who want everything in its place. Hardwood floors extend through the new closet, and a new rug adds warmth underfoot.
A Whimsical, Comfortable Playroom
Accessible open shelves and low, comfortable seating options are hallmarks of a great family-friendly playroom. A welcoming teepee, classic wooden rocking horse and a playful mural stand out beneath a cozy sky blue ceiling. An industrial chandelier and extra recessed lights make the playroom bright. We predict hours of game time on the soft rug and years spent reading on the deep, comfortable sofa.
A Whimsical, Folklore-Inspired Nursery
What’s a nursery without deer, sloths, owls and bunnies galore? A modern wooden crib is surrounded by the calming essence of nature, thanks to playful wallpaper and moody blue ceiling paint. Light-blocking Roman shades add function to this children’s bedroom, and comfortable seating transforms it into a place that any parent or grandparent could be persuaded to relax after a long day. The designers incorporated a soft rug, a variety of industrial and modern lighting sources and even a brass mobile to beckon the baby to sleep.
A New, Functional Master Bathroom
The designers incorporated a clawfoot soaking tub and the ultimate standing shower in a new master bathroom. Along the inside wall of the shower, Nate and Jeremiah designed a narrow wall-length shelf topped with marbled quartz for added function. Hand-glazed tile in a variety of earth tones is used within the shower, while white penny tile with contrast black grout blankets the ground in the new bathroom.
A Victorian Era-Inspired Sitting Room
Nate and Jeremiah designed a welcoming living room between the front entryway and the kitchen in this detail-rich home. To honor the family’s collections and antiques, accents throughout the space were thoughtfully considered. White brick, floor-to-ceiling curtains and a white and brass chandelier add extra appeal to this new family room.
Antique Cabinets and Rich, Velvet Seating in a Victorian Living Room
From floor to ceiling, Nate and Jeremiah considered every surface in this home. Their main objective was to incorporate a set of antique cabinets that the family values. They embraced the detail in the doors by carrying trim work and light colors throughout the rest of the room. Velvet blue and brown chairs also help to marry modern design with vintage and Victorian-inspired details.
Upgrading the Hearth for a Fieldstone Fireplace
Stone fireplace lovers, unite! It’s not every day you see a fieldstone fireplace in this condition, so it was important to the homeowners that it remain a focal point in their home. Nate and Jeremiah took this family’s living room to the next level by paying close attention to the important details. A new black and white tiled hearth refreshes the original fireplace, and new hardwood floors were installed to extend throughout the first floor of the home. White paint and contrast gray crown molding brighten the room and heighten the appeal.
Amazing Archways in a Restored Bungalow
Nate and Jeremiah embraced the archways throughout the first floor and leaned into curved accents throughout the new space. Over the new farmhouse dining room table, they incorporated a large paper globe pendant. To add more interest, they also treated the walls as a blank canvas and installed a soft landscape wallpaper.
A Farmhouse Kitchen with Classic Details
Check out this farmhouse kitchen! Nate and Jeremiah chose an iconic farmhouse sink and classic gray cabinets in this remodel. They also selected a gray flecked quartz countertop and backsplash, and installed a ledge for accessories. At the family’s request, they incorporated a wooden table as a kitchen island. Not only does it echo the heritage of the home, but it adds purpose and storage and will be used functionally in the new kitchen.
A Vaulted Ceiling to Enhance a Family Room
Nate and Jeremiah set out to improve an open concept living and dining space for this family. They started by paying special attention to the vaulted ceiling lines and available wall space in the living room. A wooden architectural beam was added to the highest point in the vaulted living room to add interest and draw the eyes up to appreciate the height of the space. Expansive, deep sofas beneath skylights provide an area for the family to kick back and relax, while large-scale framed artwork is used to decorate the tallest wall in the room.
An Expanded, Open Concept Kitchen
The designers sought to use the available square footage in a refreshing way and expanded the kitchen to accommodate a large island. Consequently, they were able to tie in natural brick and install plenty of open storage to make the most of the renovated home’s design. Throughout the living room and kitchen, new hardwood floors were used to create synergy throughout the home.
A Modern Farmhouse-Inspired Eat-in Kitchen
While the family did make use of the home’s formal dining room, they also dreamed to have a secondary dining area for casual meals. To satisfy the request of an eat-in kitchen, the designers included banquette seating and a gray farmhouse table. Woven pendant lights over the kitchen island complement the woven shades on the kitchen table’s chandelier. The home’s previous kitchen was filled with builder’s basic cabinetry, so we’d say this is quite the level up!
Italian Farmhouse Accents in a Modern Mud Room
What’s a mudroom if it doesn’t serve every purpose? A durable tile floor sets the stage for the entryway on the back of the house, and the family will reap the benefits of having this much storage for hats, scarves and boots. The mud room seconds as a laundry room with a sink and plenty of counter space. If you know, you know.
Designing an Open Concept Space Around a Grand Piano
To honor the legacy of a talented grandmother, Nate and Jeremiah designed a brand new open concept space to accommodate and feature an heirloom piano. As homeowners Lauren and Lisa told the designers, “We wanted to keep the memory of our mom with us. The piano was her 16th birthday present.” The traditional items saved and incorporated into the new design serve as a constant reminder of the family’s matriarch. The design team also integrated new open shelving, a dining area, and an open concept kitchen with an island to take this multi-generational home to the next level.
