Basement and Cellar Door Options

It is certainly important for a basement door to protect a basement from outdoor elements, but there is also room for style when choosing a door for your space.

Choosing a basement or cellar door seems like a simple enough decision, but there are some things to consider, from security to style.

If a basement is accessed only from within the home, then a standard, pre-hung door works best for ease of installation. Pre-hung doors come with the frame, hinges, doorknob and door in a single piece and you can paint them any color to match your scheme. With an interior door, a doorknob lock is probably all that's necessary for security, unless you're storing high-value items.

If your basement has an exterior door, and security is your top priority, a metal door with a deadbolt may be your best option. Go for one without a window to further decrease the chance of break-in.

The downside of a windowless, metal door is that it doesn't let in light. If you'd like to brighten your basement, consider a sliding glass or French door. While less secure than a metal door, there are still excellent options for security and energy efficiency. They also provide a welcoming exit to a patio or outdoor lawn area.
