Tyler Cameron and Tayshia Adams Talk Home Trends, Full-Circle Moments and More
The Bachelor Nation alumni sat down with HGTV ahead of Bachelor Mansion Takeover to talk about everything from home decor to Sex and the City.
Some might call it the reality television crossover of the year. For others, namely Bachelor Nation alums Tayshia Adams and Tyler Cameron, it's more like taking a trip down memory lane. Tayshia and Tyler had both highs and lows inside the iconic Bachelor Mansion — and now, they're back to watch its renovation come to life on HGTV's competition show Bachelor Mansion Takeover. So, we sat down with the duo to learn more about how it felt to step back into the mansion, what it was like judging their peers, Carrie Bradshaw moments and more.
In Conversation With Tayshia and Tyler
HGTV: What was it like stepping back into the mansion?
Tayshia: It’s different going [back] with someone who’s also had an experience there. We talked about our different experiences. You know, what corner of the house we did something really silly in. But it was awesome to have a hand in remodeling a house that definitely needed a facelift.
Tyler: That time of my life was such a blur. It was seven years ago now, and you forget so many things that happened. To be back in there and be in those little corners where [I] had moments with Hannah and whatnot — it was truly a fun experience.
HGTV: It shows how far you’ve come since then.
Tayshia: We were just talking about this! Looking back at how we both felt coming out of the limo way back when — it feels like a lifetime ago. And all the experiences that have come out of it are astounding. Now we’re here, judging a show at the mansion.
Tyler: Before Bachelor, I was making $200 a week doing my first construction jobs, trying to build homes and learn. Then, I go on Bachelorette, and now, full circle, I’m back on an HGTV show doing construction. It’s a wild turn of events and shows how much your life can change.
Tayshia: It's a "pinch me" moment.
HGTV: Tyler, you were in construction even before you went on The Bachelorette?
Tyler: Yeah, my first job was building pools for $12 an hour at the Hard Rock Hotel. Then, I worked under my dad’s company, and he didn’t want to pay me at all, so I was just surviving. And then Bachelorette called, and I was like, "They’re not going to pay me either, but I’m going to have way more fun there."
HGTV: Tyler, you own your own construction business and renovated your home with your partner. What was the most surprising difference between judging someone else’s renovation and executing a renovation yourself?
Tyler: I was judging my partner’s choices, too, don’t you think I wasn’t [laughs]. It is so intimidating and so scary to renovate [our] home; to renovate the Bachelor mansion! But as things start to hit the walls … as the floors start coming in … things just start to come together. I was so nervous about the choices my girlfriend was making [when we renovated our home], but she hit it out of the park. You just have to trust it. Lean into it. Renovation is all about confidence.
HGTV: Tayshia, your apartment in New York is beautiful, and you were very involved in the renovation. Did that experience affect how you approached judging on Bachelor Mansion Takeover?
Tayshia: I think you have to take into account the surroundings and the natural beauty of the space. Coming from California and moving to New York City, the vibe I wanted in my SoHo apartment was very different. I wanted it to have a sexy, fun Carrie Bradshaw moment in my apartment. Going through that process and thinking outside of the box for myself and challenging myself to try something different was exciting. [And I wanted] to see that in the mansion — if they could keep the integrity of a Tuscan home, but also … [make it] functional as well.
Tyler: Who’s Carrie Bradshaw?
Tayshia: Oh my God, please disregard him. Are you serious?
Tyler: Yeah … Is that Sex and the City?
Tayshia: [laughs] Yeah …
Tyler: That’s what I thought. I saw a great meme that said, "If you’re 33, you’re in Season 2 of your Sex and the City era."
Tayshia: When you’re in your own apartment in your 30s in New York City, you’re having a Carrie Bradshaw moment.
HGTV: Was there a moment while filming BMT you thought you might want to be the ones renovating the house?
Tayshia: I think both of us felt like that at one point. I just looked fun — and we had ideas as well. But also, it’s hard to judge.
Tyler: I enjoyed being on this side of it because my day job back home is flipping houses. Taking a step back and not having to do it — I was like, “This is fantastic. All I have to do is judge you guys?” Sign me up for next year.
HGTV: Renovating can definitely be stressful.
Tyler: Well, when you’re a competitor on the show — whether you’re renovating the mansion or competing on Bachelor — you’re on the chopping block. I’d rather be on the other side. It was nice.
Tayshia: See, I've been able to hand out roses before [as The Bachelorette]. And you go through heartbreak doing that. This was kind of along the same lines, where there's $100,000 on the line and [the competitors] are really trying to get that money. There were some tough eliminations. And it’s a group effort, and sometimes your team just doesn’t come together … and that was part of the challenge as well.
Tyler and Tayshia Talk Favorites
HGTV: Favorite design style?
Tyler: Retro-modern … funky tiles and cool colors. We’re trying to pull it off at one of the houses I’m working on.
Tayshia: Modern minimalism.
HGTV: Favorite room in your home?
Tayshia: It has to be between the kitchen … no, but I love the living room. And I love my bedroom. I just love my entire apartment.
Tyler: Mine is always the bathroom.
Tayshia: [laughing] To renovate or spend time in?
Tyler: Yes, I like the bathroom! I like a good toilet. Mine is the one that can spray and heat. But I also like a shower — a big shower, double shower with a handle. All of that! I love a bathtub. I couldn’t fit a bathtub in my bathroom at home. It was too small, but to me, a bathroom is a place to get away.
Tayshia: For most people, it’s the bedroom …
Tyler: For me, I need a nice bathroom.
HGTV: Favorite HGTV show?
Tayshia: I think House Hunters. You watch it, and you try to guess which house they’re going to choose.
Tyler: Flip or Flop was a great show. I love that with Tarek and Christina. And Renovation Island was insane … that’s a dream of mine to do a resort on an island.
Tayshia: Oh, oh! Love It or List It. That is such a good show!
HGTV: Favorite moment from BMT?
Tyler: The ending. I won’t give anything away, but … the ending is chef’s kiss!
Tayshia: I don’t think people realize how invested they’ll get in each competitor's journey. There are people who go home way too soon, and some people who will surprise you.
Tyler: This is the best marriage of reality television. You get the Bachelor Mansion drama and the HGTV design.
