A sloped ceiling in the bedroom might seem like a drawback, but you can use this architectural feature to create a cozy space in your personal retreat.

Many bedrooms on an upstairs floor or in a converted attic have sloped ceilings above a knee wall. A sloped ceiling can also be part of a vaulted ceiling design. The vertical and horizontal spaces in your room will help guide you in working with your sloped ceilings.
In older homes with smaller rooms, take advantage of your sloped ceiling to create a cozy sleeping or reading nook. Place the bed under the slope and hang a soft, sheer fabric to create the look and feel of a canopy. Or place the bed between two sloped ceilings, with small bedside tables on either side of the bed. Whether you place your bed under the slope or in between depends on the height of the knee wall and your comfort level.
In a larger room with knee walls and a sloped ceiling, create a reading nook at one end. If there is a window between the slopes, use sheer drapes to let in light. You could also create a cozy reading nook by building a window seat flanked by bookshelves.
If you have a higher vaulted ceiling, you'll have more space for a headboard, whether you place your bed under a slope or along a high wall. If your room is large, with a high ceiling, you may want to choose a four-poster or canopy bed to keep the room from seeming too cavernous. Exposed beams and a large hanging chandelier, pendant light or ceiling fan can also help the room appear more furnished and cozy. Exposed beams look great with either a traditional or contemporary look. Use rough-hewn wood and soft bed linens and curtains to create the rustic but romantic look of a mountain retreat.
A sloped ceiling is also a great place to play with color. A bright or deep shade on the sloped areas will draw the eye to the architecture. You may choose to add color or wallpaper to just part of the slope, or the walls that do not slope.
If you are feeling adventurous and have the budget for some construction, consider installing a skylight in your sloped ceiling. A skylight will add light to your room and open up the space to help prevent it from feeling cramped.
