One of the quickest and surest ways to add a touch of romance to your bedroom is to hang a ceiling canopy. A canopy can be simple—fabric draped from a cornice attached to the area just above your bed—or an elaborate series of drapes that envelops your entire room in softness.

Created in Medieval times to provide privacy for nobility in Europe, who slept with their servants nearby, canopies are a great way to create an intimate space. For adults, that most certainly means a canopy around the bed. In a child's bedroom, it might mean a canopy hung to set off a quiet reading area.

You can choose just about any type of fabric for your ceiling canopy. Lightweight and sheer fabrics are the most popular. A canopy hung over a bed in a contrasting color to the bedroom walls makes the bed stand out.

A canopy can drape directly over the bed or surround it. Some transitional or contemporary designs have a flat canopy covering just the top end of the bed, with the long end of the fabric hanging behind the headboard—or serving as the headboard itself. This look is particularly dramatic in a bedroom with a high ceiling or a vaulted ceiling.

Canopies are popular with girls of all ages, and also in nurseries. For a young girl, you can create the look of a princess's suite by hanging billowy fabric from the ceiling or high wall around the headboard and tying it back with ribbons. For a teen girl's bedroom, try a gingham fabric or a bright solid or geometric print. For a romantic look, hang a sheer mosquito net fabric. A canopy in a kid's room doesn't even have to be fabric; long strands of beads in an array of colors can create a cheery and hip look.

There are several ways to install ceiling canopies. You can hang rods from the ceiling surrounding the bed. For the rods, you can choose wood, metal, even plastic pipe, depending on the look you want. For a cornice look, hang the fabric over the head of the bed. If you want your canopy to encompass the entire room, start from the center of the room, above a hanging chandelier or pendant light (for safety, provide plenty of distance between the fabric and light bulbs), or hang the fabric from the ceiling along the perimeter of the room. White or pale colors are a typical choice for a whole-room ceiling canopy, but use your imagination and choose a color you love that complements your bedroom's decor.
