How to Make a Confetti Naturescape Quilt

Materials and Tools:

scrap fabric (green, brown, orange, red, yellow, beige, pink, purple, turquoise, black)
¼-yard of hand-dyed gray fabric for tree trunk
½-yard of backing fabric
½-yard of polyester batting
1 yard of black tulle
polyester monofilament thread
gray polyester machine embroidery thread
long-arm sewing machine

Steps:

1. Cut backing fabric and batting for the canvas into 20-by-24-inch pieces, 1 inch larger than the finished quilt will be. Cut three 21-by-25-inch black tulle pieces.

2. Cut earth-tone (brown, beige, etc.) fabrics into small confetti for the ground area.

3. Place the earth-tone confetti directly on the ground (pathway) area of the batting.

4. Cut red, yellow, orange and green fabrics into toothpick-size confetti.

5. Place the toothpick-size confetti in the outlying areas and then cover the entire area with autumn-color leaves.

6. Add green fabric confetti for leaves on some of the trees.

7. Cut black fabric into small tree-trunk shapes and position them accordingly.

8. Spreading and cutting fabrics on the surface of the quilt, add black, purple, turquoise and pink accents to make it resemble an oil painting.

9. Cover with black tulle and pin-baste the entire piece so that the fabric confetti pieces stay in place while stitching.

10. Attach the quilt to the No. 3 and No. 1 roller on your long-arm machine, making sure to feed it under the No. 2 roller.

11. Stitch all over with loops and curved stitching to hold. Use monofilament thread for the top and bobbin.

12. Cut the main tree trunk from the gray fabric and attach it with a zigzag stitch.

13. Cover again with black tulle and stitch all over to make sure all confetti is securely stitched. Repeat until you achieve the desired results.

14. Add 18-by-22-inch piping to the edge.
