Join Kat and Mike as they chat with Orlando Soria, host of HGTV’s Build Me Up (fka — Unspouse My House). To get to know each other, the three of them compare their Enneagram types — Orlando is a 6 (the loyalist), Mike is a 4 (the individualist) and Kat is a 3 (the achiever).

Orlando also talks about his new house in snowy Fish Camp, California, just outside of Yellowstone where he grew up. He’s got big plans for remodeling the house but has just started with smaller projects to make the space more comfortable for himself, his family and his rescue dog named Saturday.

Kat and Mike ask Orlando about how he got started in the business — working as a set designer with Emily Henderson. They also talk about his work on Olympian Gus Kenworthy’s Hollywood home. Even though he has famous clients, Orlando then goes on to explain how he really is passionate about making design accessible to homeowners that don't have big budgets. He talks about how they can just take small steps to make their home more inviting.

Defend the Trend: Accent Walls

In our Defend the Trend segment of the podcast, Kat and Mike ask Orlando his opinion on accent walls. It’s not just a simple yes or no answer. Orlando explains he is not a fan if it’s just a random wall painted a different color; that can look a little arbitrary and out of place. Also, painting just one wall can backfire by highlighting uneven ceiling lines and imperfections. However, Orlando is a fan of focal walls if it is a mural and if the wall is recessed or delineated with molding or some other architectural feature.
