Kids' Storage Divider

Open shelving is one of the easiest ways to divide a shared space without closing off the different areas completely. Buy a pre-made shelf and paint it a playful color that complements the room's palette.

Materials:

3 different colors of paint (one represents each child in the space and one shared color)
2 open bookshelves (preferably in the shared color)
paint brushes
rollers
painter's tape
drop cloths
measuring tape

Steps:

  1. Use a pencil and measuring tape to draw a vertical line dividing the room in half. Using this line as a guide, paint each side of the room a different color.
  2. When the paint has dried, bring the open shelves into the room and place where desired to divide the space. Determine the placement of the wall stripes by matching the height and width of the shelves.
  3. With a measuring tape and painter's tape, carry these lines around the room.
  4. Paint between the tapelines. Remove tape. Place shelves perpendicular to wall where two the primary colors meet. If you would like, use the shared color to further personalize each side of the room, like the tree and picket fence in this project.
