Make a Second Earring

Repeat all of those steps to make a second one, and then it’s time to rock your boho rainbow earrings!

Bring a boho vibe to your spring and summer outfits with these miniature rainbow earrings, inspired by the rope rainbow DIY trend that creatives like "At Home With Ashley" have made popular. They're completely customizable and make great gifts, plus they require only few materials to make.

Materials + Tools

  • thick white yarn
  • embroidery thread in colors of your choice
  • wire
  • wire cutters
  • scissors
  • earring hooks
  • jump rings
  • jewelry pliers
  • ruler
  • thumbtack
  • hot glue gun

Cut and Prepare Wire and Yarn

Cut four pieces of thick white yarn and four pieces of wire, making sure each piece is at least 2" long (Image 1). Slightly pull apart the yarn strands to insert each piece of wire into a piece of yarn (Image 2). This step will help the rainbow keep its shape.

Wrap Embroidery Thread

Tie embroidery thread onto the yarn at least 1/4" from one end of the strand, making sure it’s around the wire as well (Image 1). Wrap the thread around the yarn, covering up the tail end as you go (Image 2). Continue until the wrapped portion measures 1-3/4”, then tie off the string and trim the excess (Image 3).

Trim Wire

Pull down the extra yarn and trim the excess wire that is sticking out from the embroidery thread wrapping (Image 1 + 2). Repeat these steps for each color. The longest piece should have 1-3/4” of wrapping, then 1-1/2”, then 1-1/2” and 1” of wrapping for the shortest piece (Image 3).

Glue Into Rainbow

Bend the wrapped yarn into arcs (Image 1). Use a small amount of hot glue to glue them together into a rainbow (Image 2 + 3).

Trim Ends

Trim the excess yarn and fluff it up to make the “clouds” at the ends of the rainbow (Image 1 + 2).

Add Earring Hook

Use a thumbtack to poke a hole at the top of the rainbow between the first two arcs (Image 1). Use jewelry pliers to open up a jump ring, insert it through the hole, and close it up (Image 2). Then use a second jump ring to attach that to the earring hook (Image 3 + 4).

Make Second Earring

Repeat the above steps to make a second one, then rock your boho rainbow earrings.
