Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel Are Hosting 'White House Christmas 2022'

HGTV's annual White House Christmas special — showcasing the sparkling décor that decks the halls of the People's House every year — premieres Sunday, December 11 at 6|5c and begins streaming the same day on discovery+.

Our 2022 hosts (*drumroll, please*): Property Brothers: Forever Home co-host Jonathan Scott and actress Zooey Deschanel (as seen in What am I Eating?, Elf and New Girl).

Following HGTV tradition, First Lady Jill Biden will lead Jonathan and Zooey through the White House's magnificent rooms — which have been decorated to the theme of 'We the People' by White House Residence staff as well as more than 150 volunteers from across the country.

In the spirit of togetherness, the 2022 display ecompasses America’s shared values — the belief in possibility, optimism and unity. The theme will be brought to life by an astounding array of decorations, including more than 83,615 holiday lights; 77 Christmas trees; 300 candles; 12,000 ornaments; 1,600 bells; approximately 14,865 feet of ribbon; and DIY projects that can be recreated at home.

"Everyone is represented, no matter where they live geographically, myself included," says Jonathan. "I recently became an American citizen only a few years ago, so it really means a lot to be able to celebrate the rich history that America has to offer, this is an exciting day."

What We're Excited to See

With behind-the-scenes access to the White House holiday process, we'll see Jonathan high atop scaffolding, trimming the Official White House Christmas tree and Zooey literally decking the halls and putting the finishing touches on the massive Gingerbread White House. The pair personify the holiday spirit with fun, excitement and even a little song.

White House Christmas 2022 also features the perennially impressive Gingerbread White House creation, which includes 20 sheets of sugar cookie dough, 30 sheets of gingerbread dough and 30 pounds of chocolate. This year, it will be accompanied by a sugar cookie replica of Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, the birthplace of the United States.

In the State Dining Room, ornaments on the Christmas trees feature crafted self-portraits by the students of the 2021 Teachers of the Year from across the country, ensuring that children see themselves in this year’s holiday display.

The East Wing will feature trees with mirrored Gold Star ornaments inscribed with the names of fallen service members to honor the heroic men and women of our Nation’s military and the families who carry on their legacies.

As well, the White House will showcase a new addition to its holiday collection: a menorah created by the Executive Residence Carpentry Shop constructed using wood removed from the White House during a Truman-era renovation.

“For more than two decades, HGTV has celebrated all the work and wonder that goes into decorating the White House for the holidays, and we’ll once again deliver the warmth of the season with a visual feast to delight the entire family,” says Jane Latman President, Home and Food Content and Streaming, Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc. “The message woven into this year’s theme, We the People, reminds us that coming together is what makes the holidays special, so curl up under a warm blanket and enjoy the magic with your loved ones.”
