Hilton Carter, houseplant expert and designer, joins Marianne to talk about his third book, his recent collaboration with Target and his new workshops on the Magnolia Network app. Often called the patron saint of houseplants, Hilton didn’t start out as a botanist; his background is in design and film. He stumbled into the houseplant world by becoming a decor stylist and discovering his love for plants and how they can make any space feel cozy and warm.

Hilton has a seven-episode series on the Magnolia Network app which is available to discovery+ subscribers. In the series, Hilton teaches everything about plant care, from how to water, proper potting and the best way to propagate a variety of plants.

Are You Using the Right Pots for Your Houseplants?

Choosing the right pot for your plant is not just about looks. Different materials affect your plant's health in a variety of ways. Houseplant expert Hilton Carter explains what type of planter is best for each type of houseplant.

In Hilton's latest book, Wild Creations: Inspiring Projects to Create Plus Plant Care Tips & Styling Ideas for Your Own Wild Interior, he shares oodles of houseplant care tips, DIY projects and what he calls “plant rants." His number one plant rant: He prefers people use faux plants instead of killing real ones. When asked about what plants deserve the spotlight and should be the next big trend, Hilton says that variegated plants are having a moment, but he specifically mentions the birkin philodendron and the Audrey ficus (cousin to the fiddle leaf fig).

Next, Maria Failla, host of Bloom and Grow Radio, reveals how she developed the four plant personalities and how you can find your own plant personality. Maria talks about the most common issues she sees that people have with houseplants — not having the right amount of light and watering too much — and her remedies for both.

Marianne then talks to Jade Adams, owner of a boutique plant shop called Oglewood Avenue in Knoxville, Tennessee. They talk about the hottest selling plants at her shop — alocasia and snake plants. She also shares her top tropical plant picks for getting a jungle-like vibe in your home — bird of paradise, monstera and pothos.
