Our collective attachment to throw blankets began in toddlerhood, and it never really lessens with age. Whether you're looking for a grown-up variation of your beloved baby blanket to serve as a source of comfort in your adult years, searching for a gift for your choosiest in-law, or hunting for a lightweight throw to give you breathable warmth and style on the sofa during any season, you're in the right place. From opulent faux furs and buttery-soft chenille to classic fleece — we're covering all the bases and sharing our favorite 14 throw blankets for every style and budget.

Once designer Lisa Kooistra had chosen this throw, she kept on going (and going). “We added velvet pillows from Tonic Living and bedding from Urban Outfitters with a white linen comforter and a dark silk coverlet from Crate & Barrel,” she recalls. “The drapery is a white linen and the bed is a cream velvet. We used a lot of velvet, silk and faux furs in this room!”

Chenille, polyester and cotton — oh my! Throw blankets are made from many materials, and some are better suited for certain seasons than others.

Polyester: Polyester is a popular synthetic material often used for throw blankets because it's durable, hypoallergenic and low-maintenance. Polyester is also incredibly versatile and is used to create many faux fur options with a softness that will convince you it's the real thing. That said, polyester is not very breathable, and while it does keep you warm, it may be a tad too toasty to be used during the spring or summer months.

Fleece: Fleece blankets are cozy, casual and affordable. Fleece is beloved for its plush, fuzzy texture, machine-washability and ability to dry quickly. Like polyester, fleece lacks breathability, so it's not ideal for summer or warmer climates but perfect for cozy fall and winter days.

Chenille: Chenille is beloved by all for its buttery, velvety, addictively soft texture that leaves you feeling like you're in a cumulus cocoon. Silkiness aside, chenille is hypoallergenic, durable and stylish, with a dynamic, light-reflective finish. The major drawback of chenille is that it's more prone to pilling than other materials and can be tricky to wash at home.

Cotton: Cotton is a natural plant-based material that is lightweight, breathable and soft. Cotton throws are ideal for summer months when you want to wrap yourself in something cozy, but it's too hot to break out your faux fur favorite. The natural fabric won't leave you overheated, but it will wrinkle, and it may shrink in the wash over time.
