Creating this fun matching game is easy: Just fill pairs of bottles with prizes and let the matching madness begin. You can choose to award a prize to a player who makes a match or the player with the most matches. Just be sure to start saving your water bottles in advance.

Materials Needed:

  • 16 white mailing tubes, 3" diameter x 25" long
  • 6 sheets 8.5" x 11" label paper
  • circle cutter or scissors
  • 32 empty water bottles
  • handsaw
  • mitre box (optional but recommended)
  • fine- to medium-grit sandpaper
  • rubber cement
  • white school glue

Prepare the Shipping Tubes

Remove any labels from the mailing tubes; remove the caps and set aside. Measure the halfway point on each tube (should be 12 1/2") and mark with a pencil. Use a mitre box and handsaw to cut the tubes in half (Image 1) then use sandpaper to smooth any rough edges.

Create Rows and Connect Tubes

Before stacking, first create four side-by-side rows of five tubes and three rows of four tubes. See diagram in Image 1 below. To create a row, lay the tubes on a flat surface and run a bead of glue all the way down each tube's side where they will meet. Clamp tubes together at the front and back with clothespins and allow the glue to dry completely.

Once all seven rows have fully dried, assemble the game by stacking rows, alternating 5-4-5-4-5-4-5 (see diagram in Image 1 below). Apply a bead of glue all the way down the side of each tube where they meet (Image 2). Clamp stacked tubes together at the front and back with clothespins and allow the stacked rows to dry completely (Image 3).

Make Eyes

Print eyeball template onto six sheets of label paper. Cut out design using scissors or a circle cutter (Image 1). Remove backing from label and apply one eyeball to the flat back of each tube cap (Image 2). Fill pairs of bottles with Halloween-themed items. Center then glue the embellished lids, eyes facing out, onto the filled water bottle lids then slide bottles into the tubes randomly so no matching bottles are side by side (Image 3).
