Orange Bedrooms

Orange is a non-traditional bedroom color; when used properly, it can bring a dose of cheer and warmth to your retreat.

ASID member Natalie Umbert says a child's room doesn't have to fit into the general design scheme of the home; it can be its own entity. Let your child's imagination and personality bring out the design characteristics. No need to use traditional boy-girl colors. What does the child like? Use those colors, instead. This room, designed for a five-year-old boy, incorporates his interests and is sophisticated enough to grow with him as he ages.

Orange may not be a color you'd initially consider for a bedroom, but it's worth taking a closer look. Orange combines the warmth and passion of red with the sunny nature of yellow, and it can be found in a wide range of hues.

Orange shades run from pale to bright to deep. For a look that is both soothing and warm, consider a pale orange sherbet hue. To add an element of passion and romance, try a rich terra-cotta, which works well with mission-style furniture and other wood tones as well as traditional furniture, antiques or modern furnishings.

For a warmer look that works well with traditional or eclectic styles, look to pumpkin shades or the hues of a sunset. These tones blend well with brown fabric and accessories, creating a look that is warm and spicy without being overpowering.

A bright, citrus hue enlivens a bedroom, and it works well with white and other bright shades such as yellow, aqua, kelly green or even red. Bright shades also work well with modern furniture and, unlike with red walls, you'll have a great look with furniture in either white or unpainted wood tones.

Many children love orange. If yours is one of them, let her express her personality by looking at the various shades orange has to offer. Orange is an appropriate color for either a boy or a girl, and it can accommodate a wider age range than traditional pink or powder blue, giving the color more staying power. A room painted in a soft peach or a muted shade of pumpkin works well as a nursery with soft white furnishings, and it can age along with the child. When your child graduates from his baby furnishings, just add sturdy wood furniture and a color pop with a couple of bright shades, such as red or turquoise.

For a teen boy, pair his favorite orange shade with black bed linens and curtains, or try multicolored fabrics in a geometric design. If you want to be creative, consider a wall mural or stripes in complementary colors.

For a teen girl's room, combine orange with white or kelly green in fabric choices or wall stripes, for a fresh and feminine look that isn't frilly.

If you love orange but are concerned about going overboard, consider painting just one wall. A bright shade of orange can enliven a wall, and it's a good backdrop for artwork or a large headboard with just bits of the bright color peeking through.
