Materials Needed

  • 1 bar castile soap
  • 1 cup washing soda
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup Epsom salt
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 10 drops lemon essential oil

Steps to Making Homemade Laundry Detergent

1. Prepare Ingredients

Grate soap in a food processor using the grating attachment or use a hand grater.

2. Mix It Up

Combine grated soap, washing soda and Epsom salt in a large bowl.

Note: To make your own washing soda, place a thin layer of baking soda in a pan and bake at 400 degrees F for 35-40 minutes, mixing halfway through. Be careful when removing from the oven as this can be an irritant to your eyes and throat.

Add white vinegar one tablespoon at a time until the mixture is clumpy.

3. Create Packed Pods

Tightly pack the mixture into an ice cube tray using your fingers. Let it dry for at least 24 hours.

4. Remove, Store + Use!

Remove the pods using a butter knife, and place them in an airtight container until laundry day. Use one pod for regular loads and two for bulky loads.
