Finding magical settings for his lucky clients’ next chapters is very much David Bromstad’s thing, and it comes as no surprise that he welcomes fortuitous plot twists in his own tale, too. Case in point: his recent adventure in North Carolina with Neal and Marie, a newlywed couple whose love story threaded through their 31-year marriage, divorce, COVID-era reconnection and remarriage. With a house-hunting backstory like that, what could possibly come as a surprise?

Daughter Liz and her parents, Marie and Neal Weinstein, were ready for a meet-cute with their North Carolina forever home. David's one-half of a meet-cute could be in progress right now.

Cindy Crisp’s Curveball

Enter Cindy Crisp, a realtor who works with prospective homebuyers in Charlotte and its suburbs. She and David had partnered up on property searches before, and their reunion was a cozy one: “To find out how far $7 million will stretch in this growing city [now], I’m visiting my saucy little spitfire, Cindy,” he explained.

Realtor Cindy Crisp introduced what one might call Chekhov's Gary into the drama of this episode. You hear about him once, and you know he's going to come up again at some point.

David was so confident in Cindy’s ability to make land-based local love matches that he asked for a few pointers of his own. She initially suggested Ballantyne, a South Charlotte neighborhood that’s a little out of the way. “Are there a lot of gay people [there]?” he asked.

“They like the South End,” Cindy replied.

“There we go! I’m moving to South End,” David announced. “I need a husband to play with.”

One could argue that this is actually the opening scene of Cindy's show, My 'My Lottery Dream Home' Dream Gary.

And That's When Things Got Weird

“I thought you had one,” Cindy explained.

“No, I’ve been single for like 10 years!” David said.

“Well,” Cindy asked, “who’s Gary?”

“Who’s Gary?!” David replied. His camera crew dissolved into laughter in the background. “Gary, if you’re out there,” he mimed a telephone and mouthed, "call me."

One Instagram commenter spoke for the group: “A man like David should not be single!”

“Who’s Gary is my new favorite line,” another said.

HGTV Dream Home and HGTV Urban Oasis designer Brian Patrick Flynn also spoke for the group: “i can’t stop watching this!” (He was promptly accused of being Gary.)

“Maybe you manifested Gary for David!” yet another commenter speculated.

David Manifests Gary

Cindy did not call a husband named Gary into existence for David in a literal sense, but in a figurative one … she sort of did? As David explained in a follow-up reel, on-the-spot Gary auditions commenced online immediately, and competition was fierce in all senses of the word.

“You guys have absolutely slid into all of my DMs and I could not have been more thrilled with it,” he said. “I don’t think I’ve received more like yum yums from boys in my entire life, so we’re gonna move this beyond Gary and we’re going to go to all the boy names. Why not?”

David's got quite the dream home waiting when he finds The One.
