Step Inside the 'Maine Cabin Masters' Inn Renovation

Chase and Sarah Morrill — hosts of Magnolia Network's makeover show Maine Cabin Masters — have renovated more than 100 Maine-based homes alongside Chase's designer sister, Ashley Morrill, and her carpenter husband Ryan Eldridge. So, when Chase and Sarah discovered the former Rise and Shine Bed and Breakfast in Monmouth, Maine was for sale, they scooped it up hoping to usher it into the next chapter of their lives. Before they got started, the 12-acre property featured nine bedrooms and an adjoining barn. "We used to drive by, look at it, and say, 'That would be a cool spot,'" Chase remembers. The couple envisioned weddings and parties taking place at the Inn, with guests enjoying the Cobbosseeconte Lake nearby — but first a major renovation was in order. And so began Maine Cabin Masters: All Inn. Ahead tour Chase and Sarah's finished masterpiece.

A large and rundown bed and breakfast needs a big cast of characters to get it up and running! From left to right, Dixie, Ashley Morrill-Eldridge, Ryan Eldridge, Sarah and Chase Morrill, Jedi and the family dog, Tigger, worked on the property to ensure Sarah and Chase's dream could become a reality — especially before the next vacation season got underway.

This project is not like the cabin projects of Chase and Sarah's past. The inn was last functional in 2020 and required a lot of structural work and design improvements — from broken siding to unsightly paint jobs. The duo had a budget of $800,000 and a timeline of nine months, which meant every moment spent renovating mattered.

Sarah and Chase christened the bed and breakfast "Water's Run" to embrace the area's horse racing history. The property is located between two lates, where the race horses used to get exercise. (And while current guests can do the same, the couple is hoping they'll spend plenty of time indoors, too).

Pine paneling and a dark-wood reception desk set the tone in the new lobby, which was once a neglected living space used for storing furniture. Chase and Sarah wanted a dedicated area to welcome guests, and this updated room also has a fireplace and sofa to make a warm first impression.

As one of the resort's seven refreshed suites, the Cobbosseecontee Suite features the original wooden shutters. Horse-themed wallpaper ties into the bed and breakfast's history with racing and complements the wood furnishings. The space also features an enlarged bathroom, with square footage taken from a former closet, alongside a generous bed.

In the Cobb Bathroom, the team repurposed a vintage dresser into a wide vanity, complete with soap made specially for the bed and breakfast. The space embodies the old-meets-new ambiance Sarah wanted to capture.

The Cobbosseecontee Suite has a place for guests to curl up with a good book, thanks to a cozy corner chair and side table. Sarah worked hard to find the right furnishings for each room, mixing vintage and new pieces with items made by local artisans.

The Androscoggin Suite was once nautical themed, but Chase, Sarah and the team knew it was too dated to salvage. They knocked down a wall to make the room larger, then installed pine wainscoting on the walls for a warm finish. The bed also showcases wood detailing that complements the other natural features in the room.

"I love the guest kitchen as it is," Sarah says. "Some people might think it's dated, but I really like the older style." Sarah wanted to hold on to the yellow cabinetry and checkerboard tiles as an homage to the original owners, but she still modernized the room to make it functional and safe for guests. Now, the doorway is wider, the stove is brand new and extended countertops offer guests more space to prepare snacks and tea.

The formal dining room is intended to be a place where guests can enjoy meals cooked in the commercial kitchen, creating a familial atmosphere where travelers can hopefully become friends. Botanical wallpaper and a rich green paint cover the walls and cabinetry, while new lighting illuminates artwork that ties back to Sarah's family. "Those were in our personal collection, and now they're here," Sarah said.

Sarah loved the circa-1920s painted tiles around the fireplace, which depicted horses, but the structure was in bad shape. The team painstakingly repaired and preserved the tiles as they got rid of the rot, and now they're highlighted in the new library. Original wood floors and pieces from the Morrill's collection make the room feel cozy and inviting.
