Zeitgeist. Merriam-Webster’s defines it as the general intellectual, moral, and cultural climate of an era. The term, actually a German word, literally means “time ghost.” The Americanized equivalent might be “the spirit of the times.” If 2020 has a zeitgeist, without question it includes a reorientation on just how we think about “home” and the time we spend there. Recently members of the HGTV family encapsulated some of those thoughts and reflections in a video montage titled “Home Is ...” (You can see it here.)

Now HGTV prepares to build on that basic idea in a daring new show titled Design at Your Door. In it, HGTV will be providing expert advice from its well-known stable of pros who will help real people re-envision and upgrade their homes — all within the general context of these extraordinary and challenging times.

“We’re all looking for ways to stay happy and connected, and a series like this feels right, right now,” said Jane Latman, president, HGTV. “We’re spending a lot of time at home and all around us are those ‘to-do’s’ that we can no longer ignore. The great news is that if you want help, HGTV is ready with the trusted experts who can guide you from start to finish. Through technology, you can invite them into your home, show them your challenge, and we will send the solution to your front door.”

How It Works

Fearless DIY-ers who are up for a home improvement challenge can apply today for their biggest one yet — even as we’re all #HomeTogether.

In preparation to take their home to the next level, Design at Your Door hopefuls should pull out their paint brushes, break out the sewing machine and dust off their woodworking tools. After an initial virtual consultation with an HGTV expert, the selected homeowner will receive a surprise package of personalized design elements custom-created and assembled especially for them and their specific project.

Casting is open now. If you’ve got a room in your home that just isn’t working for your family and needs a little love, we want to hear about it. The show’s producers are searching for desperate homeowners who need help to reinvigorate tired interiors – and would be willing to be coached remotely by one of the HGTV’s popular home renovation stars. Interested homeowners can send an email with their story and photos of the room they wish to transform to designatyourdoor1@gmail.com or visit HGTV.com/beonhgtv for more info.
