Materials Needed:

  • white chocolate chips
  • fortune cookies
  • candy heart-shaped sprinkles
  • microwave-safe glass container
  • wax paper
  • Chinese takeout box
  • felt sheets: pale pink and hot pink
  • chopsticks
  • Aleene's Tacky Glue or felt glue (Tip: regular craft or hot glue won't bond felt to felt)
  • scissors
  • pencil
  • Post-It notes or small pieces of paper
  • chip brush

Melt Chocolate Chips and Dip Cookies

Pour white chocolate chips into a microwave-safe container and place in microwave. Using a low power setting, melt chocolate chips, stirring frequently. Note: Alternatively, you can use a double-boiler to melt the white chocolate chips. Holding one end, dip a fortune cookie into chocolate and place on wax paper (Image 1). While chocolate is still wet, press candy hearts onto chocolate (Image 2). Continue dipping cookies until you have enough to fill box (Image 3).

Create Felt Heart and Arrow

Fold a small piece of paper (or Post-It note) in half then draw half of a heart (Image 1). Tip: Using a Post-It note allows you to create a pattern that will stick to the felt when tracing. On two more folded pieces of paper, draw half of the tip and tail (fletching) of an arrow (Image 2). Cut these out to create templates.

Cut Out Felt Pieces

Unfold templates and trace one heart onto hot pink felt and two each of the arrow points and tails onto pale pink felt then cut out (Images 1 and 2).

Mark Holes for Arrow

Lay chopstick across heart at an angle then mark where it will enter and exit (Image 1 and 2). Using scissors, make small slits at marks.

Assemble Heart and Arrow

Slide chopstick through holes in felt heart then glue together the arrow's double-sided tip and tail using a thick layer of felt glue or Aleene's Tacky Glue. Note: Because felt is so porous, regular craft glue simply soaks in and doesn't create a bond when gluing felt to felt. Tacky Glue, some fabric glues and felt glue are your best bets. Set aside and allow glue to thorougly dry which can take a few hours; you can speed up this process by placing the heart in a slightly warm oven.

Attach Heart to Takeout Box

Brush glue onto the backside of heart and place on takeout box. While gluing felt to felt requires a long dry time, the glue will set up quickly when attaching felt to cardboard. Finally, fill the box with dipped fortune cookies and give your valentine a sweet surprise (Image 1). Alternative: Dress up a second takeout box with paper doilies and self-adhesive gems (Image 2).
