Ingredients

  • 12 store-bought fortune cookies
  • 6 ounces pink candy melting wafers
  • 6 ounces teal candy melting wafers
  • assorted sprinkles and dragees
  • 4 ounces white ready-made fondant (check the candy-making aisle in your craft store)
  • black food color marker
  • Yield: 1 dozen

Place the pink and teal candy melting wafers in separate heat-proof bowls. Microwave each bowl at 30 second intervals at 100% power, until the candy can be stirred smooth.

Dip one side of each fortune cookie into the melted candy (Image 1), then immediately dip into the sprinkles (Image 2). Place the cookies on a sheet of parchment and let stand until firm, about 10 minutes (Image 3).

Knead fondant well and roll flat on a sheet of parchment paper (Image 1). Trim the edges of the fondant edges so they are square (Image 2). Cut the fondant into long thin strips so they look like paper fortunes. Let stand until the surface is dry, about 1 hour. Use a food writer to pen “Happy New Year” and other messages on the fondant strips (Image 3). Tuck one end of the fondant fortune strips into the dipped fortune cookies (Image 4).

Gift them in Chinese carry-out boxes or display the cookies on a gilded tray.
