Costumes for infants can be expensive, especially since your child will most likely only wear them once before outgrowing them. But this simple lamb costume is inexpensive, fast to put together and only requires minimal sewing skills. Best of all, you probably already have a pair of pants or leggings and a long-sleeved shirt to use as a base. This simple DIY costume comes together in 30 minutes or less.
Materials Needed
- 1/2 yard of faux fur or sherpa shag fleece fabric
- black leggings or pants
- black long-sleeved T-shirt
- 9” X 12” sheet of black craft felt
- scissors
- sewing machine or hand sewing needle and thread
- paper
- pencil
The Lamb Body
This costume is easy to customize based on the size of your child. You will be using a long-sleeved shirt that currently fits your child as a pattern for the fuzzy lamb body (Image 1). Fleece is ideal for this project because it does not fray when cut, which eliminates the need for hemming. Fold the 1/2 yard of fleece in half lengthwise, with the fuzzy sides touching. Center the T-shirt on top of the folded fabric. It’s OK that the sleeves hang off the side — the fuzzy tunic will be sleeveless. Trace around the shirt with a pencil. Ignore the sleeves and try to follow the curve to fit the armhole of the shirt (Image 2). Cut along the traced line about 1/2 inch from the line — this is the seam allowance (Image 3). Sew a 1/2 inch seam allowance along the sides and shoulder of the tunic. Leave the bottom 2 inches of the shirt’s sides open. The slits will make it easier for your child to move when wearing the tunic (Image 4).

Headband
For the headband, you will need a piece of black craft felt, a piece of paper (to draw an ear pattern) and a piece of fleece that’s at least 4 inches wide and matches the circumference of your child’s head (Image 1). Draw an ear shape pattern on a piece of paper and cut it out. Fold the craft felt in half. Lay the ear pattern on top, lining up the edge to the fold of the felt. Pin in place and cut it out. You should have two ears (Image 2). Line up the felt ears about halfway down each side of the headband. Sew them in place (Image 3). Tuck the ears in and turn the headband inside out, then sew the bottom of the band (Image 4).

Finishing Up
Dress your child in the black T-shirt and leggings. Then, slip on the fuzzy tunic. Finish off the costume by placing the ear headband over the child’s ears. Your precious little lamb is ready to charm.
