This daybed offers a comfortable spot to relax outside once spring arrives.

Materials and Tools:

pine (1"x10"x8', 1"x4"x8', 1"x3"x8' and 1"x2"x8')
galvanized nails
wood screws
wood glue
saw
paint (we regret specifics are not available)
polyurethane
220-grit sandpaper
4" foam

Steps:

1. To make the outer frame, cut four 1x10 board to the desired size (the featured project uses full-sized mattress dimensions).

2. Cut three 20-inch 1x4s for the legs. Cut one in half lengthwise and assemble the four boards so the legs are four inches wide per side. Secure with wood glue and wood screws or galvanized nails.

3. Attach the legs to the inside corners using cleats cut from 1x2 boards glued together. Drill beveled pilot holes and attach the cleats to the frame using wood screws. The legs should be attached leaving two inches from the top of each leg to the top of the daybed so the foam can fit inside the frame.

4. To hold the plywood and foam in place, attach a railing of 1x2 boards all the way around the bed at the same height as the top of the legs and cleats.

5. To add more stability for pillows, create a backrest using 1x3s for the vertical and horizontal supports. Secure the backrest together using wood screws or nails and after drilling pilot holes, attach it to the frame using lag bolts.

6. Cut the plywood to size so it will rest inside the frame. Cut three or four 1x2s for slats and space them out across the railings. Put the plywood on top.

7. Prime and paint all the boards before assembling or once complete. Once dry, sand the edges for a worn look. Remove the dust with a tack cloth or damp rag. Apply polyurethane according to the manufacturer's directions.
