Make a Monkey Fist Knot

Using thick cotton rope, make a monkey fist knot around a 5-inch-diameter foam sphere (available at crafts stores). For a step-by-step knot how-to, go to hgtv.com/monkey-fist-knot.

Wrap the Base

Wrap a 5-inch-diameter lamp base with the same kind of rope you used in the first step, securing it with hot glue as you go. Dab the ends of the rope with hot glue so they don’t fray.

Attach Pieces

Stick the pole from a lamp kit through the center of the knot, between the sections of rope. Screw the pole into the base, and wire the lamp following the kit’s instructions. Add a lampshade.
